This is Wilson, a Laborador Retriver mix. Wilson presented to us with difficultly walking, difficulty eating, and some pretty severe cervical swelling. During Wilson's stay with us, a CT scan showed very enlarged lymph nodes in his neck. He also had aspiration pneumonia. Wilson received supportive care at our Annapolis location. As he continued to feel better, he was discharged to the care of his family at home.
Wilson is now doing great at home on daily steroids and just celebrated his 7th birthday! Happy Birthday Wilson!
Tito, an 8-year-old MN Australian Cattle Dog, had a different type of "Take Your Dog to Work Day" when he came in to see our friends at Anne Arundel Veterinary Emergency Clinic earlier this week.
Tito's owner is a longtime AAVEC employee who brought Tito in with concern for a foreign object in his throat after noticing vomiting and gagging, hearing changes in his breathing and an increase in bad breath. Dr. Tanya Sommerville began care for Tito and determined that he would need an endoscopy to remove the object.
Dr. Alyse Zacuto, DACVIM, and her team were able to anesthetize Tito and successfully locate and remove a piece of wood. Tito's owner reports that he is much happier and she has kept the piece of wood as a souvenir #vetmedproblems

In the accompanying videos, you can hear the alarming change in Tito's breathing and watch the AVIM&O Annapolis team successfully remove the obstruction.
Last month, we celebrated the retirement of Dr. Janet Peterson! Dr. Peterson provided incredible service to our AVIM&O patients and clients for 24 years, and we couldn't be more grateful for her time, compassion, and the knowledge she has shared with us. She will be so missed in her retirement, but we can't wait to see all the amazing things that she does!
Please feel free to leave your glad tidings for Dr. Peterson in the comments below!
Rain or shine our team is here to serve!!! ☂️ To close out National Veterinary Technician Week, we wanted to share our talented and passionate team who work together to make our people and patients feel cared for.
Thank you to our show-stopping team for all the amazing work you do! 💙
Please join us in congratulating Dr. John Paola, DACVIM on 25 years with AVIM&O!
Dr. Paola is a native of Pittsburgh and a graduate of the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He worked as a general veterinary practitioner in Pittsburgh for two years after graduation, before moving on to an internship at the Ohio State University. This served as a springboard to a residency in small animal internal medicine, also at Ohio State. He passed the certifying examination for the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine upon the completion of his residency. After three years as an internist in Pittsburgh, he moved to Annapolis and joined AVIM in 1997.
Dr. Paola is a very proud third-generation Italian-American, and recent travel to Italy has advanced his interest in the Italian language and all things Italian. We celebrated Italian-style with a sparkling grape juice "wine" bar, pasta lunch, and a picture trip to Italy.
Dr. Paola has treated hundreds of patients at AVIM&O over the years and we feel truly blessed to have his expertise and calming demeanor on our team. Congratulations, Dr. Paola!
From our feline-loving family to yours, Happy #NationalCatDay from AVIM&O! Here are some of the kitties who are loved by AVIM&O employees!
Happy #NationalCatDay from the kitties of AVIM&O! We know the canines get a lot of attention so we wanted to shine the spotlight on our feline friends today for being so purrfect.
