Formerly known as Dog Day of August, we moved the event to May in 2023. Our Annual Dog Day of August in Colonial Beach is held each year as a memorial to Sharon Smith, who founded the event in 2011. This laid-back, kid-friendly, fun filled morning for dogs and their people continues to benefit the Colonial Beach Humane Society and Colonial Beach Rivah Dogs. The Humane Society runs the Feral Cat TN

R and Colony Program; and Rivah Dogs runs the Pet Waste Station and Dog Park Program. Pre-Register to Participate with your dog here: https://bit.ly/CBVA_DogDay

Thank you for your Public Comments on the proposal to allow dogs on the beach in the summer from 6-9 am. The number of people who opposed the change was far greater than the number of people who supported it. Their testimonies during our Public Comment period were powerful.

As a result, I made the motion to remove the proposed change in language from Ordinance No. 758, Chapter 5, “Beaches, Waterways, Boardwalk, Parks, Recreational Areas and Facilities” of the Town of Colonial Beach Code of Ordinances.

Based on the Public Comments, I am convinced that the issue is NOT just about “dogs on the beach between 6 and 9 am in the summer season." The overwhelming problem is enforcement of this and other prohibitions related to our beaches.

There are still many dog friendly places in Colonial Beach. I encourage you to support Dockside Restaurant and Tiki Bar, and the Colonial Beach Yacht Center, which allow their customers to bring their dogs to play on the private beach at the end of The Point.

I encourage you to help enforce the rules related to the beaches, the Boardwalk, along the Town’s Right of Way, AND at Robin Grove Dog Park through Peer Pressure. If you see something, say something, NICELY!

Through CB Rivah Dogs donations and volunteerism, we have installed and are maintaining over 20 pet waste stations around Town. But, the pet waste problem continues. I have been a bit overwhelmed by the amount of dog f***s on the ground at Robin Grove Park. It reminds me of those “free” Dog Parks I see adjacent to fast food establishments at Interstate Exits. I spent about 20 minutes picking it up while Ren played in the park.

Thank you for all you do to help make Colonial Beach more Dog Friendly and Dog Safe!

Dogs on the Beach
Many of you have lobbied me over the past few years to allow dogs to be walked on the beach early in the morning during the summer season. We voted 4-3 to consider a change in the relevant ordinance in April. If you support this proposal, we need to hear your voice at our meeting tomorrow night! You can speak in person during Public Comments or send an email to [email protected] with a copy to our Clerk if you want your comments read into the record at the meeting. Our Clerk's email is [email protected]
