Public Service Announcement:

There is a large canine flu H3N2 and parainfluneza outbreak affecting the greater Birmingham, Al area right now, and we are also seeing a growing rise in cases in the Nashville, TN area.

Affected dogs are unvaccinated (so far not seeing vaccinated dogs affected). Approximately 5-10% of these cases have died. If you are traveling in these areas with your dogs, caution is advised. It is recommended to avoid public places and to sanitize your vehicle.

Also, vaccinate your dogs. We carry the flu vaccine in our hospital, and are walk-in welcome. Your dog needs an initial vaccine and a booster 2-4 weeks later. In the meantime, avoid these areas if possible. We have not seen any cases in our area, but now is the time to vaccinate!
