At West Hills, we love helping people and their pets, and yesterday, we had the chance to help make a truly special reunion happen. Meet Derks, a grey tabby with quite the story!

Earlier this week, a kind-hearted Good Samaritan brought in a stray cat she had been feeding, and we were more than happy to check him for a microchip. To everyone’s delight, this sweet stray wasn’t so ‘stray’ after all—he had a chip, and a name: Derks! It turns out Derks had been missing since January. His owner had spent months searching but eventually had to move to central Oregon without him.

Thanks to a caring community member and that life-saving microchip, we were able to reunite Derks with his owner, Rachael—who drove four hours to Corvallis for their joyful reunion! 🐾❤️

We couldn’t be happier for Rachael and Derks, and we’re thrilled to have been part of their story. Enjoy your new home in Central Oregon, Derks!

September is also Animal Pain Awareness Month - even small subtle changes like your dog sleeping more or your cat hiding more can mean something is going on - it isn't always as obvious as a yelp of pain or limping on a limb.

Biannual exams can help us to recognize changes early so that we can intervene as soon as possible for the best comfort for your pet.

September is National Guide Dog/Service Dog Month, and we are so thankful for those working dogs who make their handlers' lives easier and safer with them in it.

It is important to be respectful to service dogs when out in public - don't speak to them or try to get their attention, pet them, or allow your personal pet if you are in a public area go up to them. They are working and need to focus!

Today is National Meow like a Pirate Day!
Cats have long since been a sign of good or bad luck, and sailors often saw cats as good luck charms that would keep away bad spirits - and rodents! Now cats aren't known for being the best swimmers, but neither were pirates - so they were just as qualified as their human counterparts.

Today is National Blind Dog Day - dogs are rather resilient and adaptible when it comes to having a handicap like this, but they still might struggle with things like depth perception, confidence, and interaction with other animals. Have you ever had a dog that has experienced vision loss either suddenly or gradually?
