Foster puppies did so good at the market! We met adults and kids, and even got to practice our leash manners around other dogs.*

These guys will be available through when they are fixed.

* We don't do on leash greetings for dogs. The leash provides safety of containment but also a barrier for their communication. Additionally, we don't want puppies to think they're going to greet every dog. Not only are some dogs selectively social, but we don't want this to be a practiced behavior when they reach adulthood.

Good puppies take good exposure. Tika joined us at the Saturday market this weekend because she did so well at an earlier, smaller gathering.

When socializing puppies, you want to make sure that we are not overwhelming them. For our trip, this meant taking less frequented paths through the market and giving Tika a lot of breaks. Additionally, we wanted to make sure she had a positive experience, so we pulled out the good stuff. Tika got rewarded with freeze dried pork heart from .pdx and dehydrated pork liver treats from the market.

Tika will be available for adoption from when she gets fixed. Until then, we train!

It's never too early to start puppy training. Foster homes can do so much for puppies! Check with your local shelter today if you can spare a few weeks to get them started on the right foot in life. Worried about your own dog? Trust me, puppies learn so much from adult dogs in the home.

Fostering saves lives! This little Heartland Humane Shelter & Care cutie is learning puppy manners and growing up so he can get adopted!

Fostering can be a couple of days or a couple of weeks, but it can mean the life for that dog. Shelters can be overwhelming and scary, and providing a safe place to land for those extra sensitive, young, or medically needy dogs is much needed.

Plus, the best way to cure puppy fever: remind yourself how much WORK they are!

Holiday management sometimes means taking a break from the party.

You can set your four-legged family members up for success in a variety of ways. Today we highlight the importance of providing a separate space. This can be a bedroo ( as Avi is pictured here), in a bathroom, another floor, or anywhere that the party isn't. Our dog should feel safe and secure in this environment so they can decompress from the often loud and energetic party scene.

Stay tuned for more tips for holiday success!

As I have walked quite a few dogs in this area, please be cautious if you have a water loving pooch! Algae bloom reported in Cronemiller Lake at Peavy, this can be very toxic to pets and children.

Stay cool in clean waters, moving water is your friend!

‼️ Important ‼️ Oregon Health Authority (OHA) issued a recreational use health advisory today for Cronemiller Lake due to the presence of a cyanobacteria bloom. People and pets should avoid contact with the water, scum, foam, or algae. We have signage placed around the lake.

Children and pets are at increased risk for exposure because of their size and levels of activity. Dogs can get extremely ill and even die within minutes to hours of exposure to cyanotoxins by drinking the water, licking their fur or eating the toxins from floating mats or dried crust along the shore. This is regardless of a recreational use health advisory in place.
