Control and management of internal parasites is a major health challenge on sheep and goat farms AND dewormers just don’t work like they used to. If this sounds relatable and you’re in San Joaquin County and Stanislaus County region, join us on August 19th. We will learn integrated management practices and practice skills necessary for FAMACHA certification to help us use dewormers strategically when they’re needed.

Going to the annual convention? Join me in the morning on Wednesday, August 7th for a Secure Sheep & Wool Supply Planning Workshop.

Hearing about H5N1 outbreaks in dairy cattle across the US? What about Vesicular Stomatitis last year in California? Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) virus in Greece? Foot and mouth disease? These are highly contagious viral diseases that can affect sheep and other livestock threatening our Nation’s food supply and your livelihood. Controlling the spread of these foreign animal disease outbreaks will involve stopping animal and animal product movement for a period of time. Once movements are restarted, producers will require special permits from the California Department of Food and Agriculture for animal movement.

The Secure Sheep and Wool Supply (SSWS) Plan if approved by CDFA’s Secure Food Supply (SFS) Program is designed to support disease control for infected farms and allow business operations that are unaffected by the disease (i.e. negative for the disease) but located within a quarantine Control Area to continue some business operations to maintain economic viability. The program is voluntary EXCEPT during an animal disease outbreak when producers must adhere to the all the Program requirements to receive a product or animal movement permit. During this workshop we will focus on specific CDFA SFS Program requirements to help you prepare now BEFORE an outbreak.

Professional development, extension, what ever you want to call it, is the most rewarding part of what we do! Today we worked with the Antimicrobial Use & Stewardship team from CDFA to refresh their sample collection skills before they help USDA collect samples for the 2024 NAHMS Sheep Study this summer.

The sheep benefits from an industry wide study once every ten years or so. The last sheep study in 2011 did not include sampling sheep to detect disease causing pathogens. Don’t miss out on this opportunity. If you own sheep in California and participated in Phase 1 of the study and want to participate in phase 2 even though you previously declined OR you never got the chance to join the study but want to DM me and I will help you connect with the study lead, Dr. Natalie Urie, to get you enrolled.

Thanks for considering representing the sheep industry in this effort to bring awareness and understanding to important health and production issues.

This Sheep Shuttle (a ewe-ber of sorts 😜) has taken our team to many great places in the past two weeks! Santa Maria to Hopland and even over to Minden, NV. Austin Brown is well deserving of his scholarship award from the CWGA! Congratulations! As much as we loved the Sheep Shuttle, maybe next time we could drive something with 4 wheel drive?? 😅😂

After an amazing day of pulling blood samples from sheep for 9 hours, today seems like quit the opposite 😊 sometimes it’s a good change to sit with your thoughts in a quiet lab all day. So beyond excited and appreciative to all those who express an interest in our research with sheep and goats!
