Summer is a great time of the year to be a horse owner but let's not forget that heat, aggressive insects, and drought-hardened pastures can really impact the health and comfort of our equine friends.

One of the side effect of the heat for some horses is the inability to sweat properly. This condition, called anhidrosis, is potentially dangerous for horses because it compromises their ability to thermoregulate even in weather that doesn’t seem that hot, and therefore puts them at higher risk of heat stress.

Anhidrosis is not fully understood yet; it is widespread in the hot and humid regions of the southeastern United States and the Gulf states, but it is also widely reported elsewhere during the summer and particularly during heat waves. If your horse has a high respiratory rate and does not seem to tolerate turnout on hot days, be sure to discuss it with your veterinarian.

Remember that administering unnecessary medications without consulting your horse doctor first could do more harm than good, as it puts your equine friend at risk of developing harmful side effects!

📌 Tips to keep your sport horse's hooves healthy and strong. Your farrier will thank you! 😉

☑️ Ensure regular trimming & shoeing. Hoof growth rate 📈 can depend on multiple factors, including nutrition, genetics, environment, regular professional hoof care, weight management, and regular movement and exercise.

☑️ Feed high quality hay and supplement with vitamins & minerals. Work with your veterinarian to create a balanced nutrition plan that suits your horse's needs.

☑️ Provide 24/7 access to water. 💧

☑️ If and when disease occurs, work with your veterinarian 🩺 to provide appropriate treatment.

Consult with your veterinarian and farrier if you have any questions or concerns regarding your horse's hoof health.

Warm ☀️ and wet 💦 can be a recipe for pastern dermatitis. More commonly known as "scratches", "mud fever", "dew poisoning", "greasy heel" or "cracked heels”.

We see more cases in warm, wet climates because horses 🐴 are getting bathed more frequently, sharing sport boots, or simply getting turned out early in the morning when the pastures are wet with dew.

➡️ Here a few ways you can prevent this common skin condition.

Tick🕷 Awareness for Horse Owners:

As the weather warms up, ticks become more active, and our horses are at risk🐴❗️ Horses can contract Lyme disease through several types of infected ticks carrying spirochete bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. The deer tick, also known as Izodes scapularis, is the most common type of tick responsible for Lyme disease.

Essential Tips to Keep your Horses Safe:

🔎 Tick Removal: If you find a tick on your horse, ensure you remove it properly. Wearing gloves, use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Pull upward with steady pressure, making sure to extract the entire tick, including its head and mouthparts. Dispose of the tick by crushing it or placing it in a jar with alcohol.

🔎 Groom Regularly: Regular grooming is your first line of defense. Brush your horse daily to check for ticks. Ticks that haven’t engorged with blood are tough and mobile, so thorough grooming helps prevent infestations.

Symptoms of Lyme disease can be vague and can crossover with symptoms of other equine diseases 🦠. Possible symptoms may include swelling at the tick bite site, inflammation surrounding the eye, swollen joints, lethargy, stiffness, behavior changes, and lameness.

Consult with your equine veterinarian if you think your horse may be exhibiting symptoms of Lyme disease.

Biosecurity Tips for Horse Shows 🐴 🔍

Your horse’s health is the top priority during competitions. 🏆 However, mingling horses at showgrounds poses risks. While we can’t eliminate all disease threats, following core biosecurity principles significantly reduces the risk of introducing and spreading illnesses.

Here's what you should focus on:

1️⃣ Limit Contact: Minimize horse interactions with other animals, humans, and shared equipment.
2️⃣ Clean and Disinfect: Regularly sanitize equipment to prevent disease transmission.
3️⃣ Isolate Sick Horses: If a horse shows signs of illness, promptly isolate and seek veterinary evaluation.

Before Competing:

✅ Check Entry Requirements: Verify vaccination records and health declarations with event organizers.
✅ Pre-Travel Health Check: Examine your horse daily and monitor their temperature for at least 3 days before departure. Any fever above 101.5°F warrants caution.
✅ Past Exposure: If your horse has been near infectious cases recently, consult a veterinarian for evaluation and testing.

Remember, a healthy horse is a winning horse!

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is one way to help maintain muscle mass and topline on your horse during training or rehabilitation from injury. 🐴

FES is the application of computer-regulated electrical impulses to the skin in a waveform that mimics the motor neuron signal the brain 🧠 sends to the muscle to cause a contraction. It is considered “functional” electrical stimulation because the waveform replicates the normal contraction of the muscles being stimulated, just as if the brain had initiated the contraction.

This treatment modality has the ability to treat both muscle spasm ✔️ and muscle atrophy ✔️; and is excellent both as a primary therapy or can be used with other treatment during training or rehabilitation.

During treatment, FES feels like a deep muscle massage because the software mimics the electrical signals produced naturally between the brain and the body. FES treatments do not require sedation and horses can be ridden shortly after their treatments in most instances.
