Our main "yoga focus" at Sun Dog Yoga Studio is Ashtanga Yoga. The Ashtanga Yoga asana practice is distinctive in its use of "vinyasa" or breath-synchronized movement. In other words, we link breath and yoga asana in a moving meditation. Ashtanga also utilizes the powerfully cleansing ujjayi breath, creating internal heat. This unique combination of movement and breath aligns the body’s structural system and detoxifies the internal organs and muscular systems. Together, these elements create a strong, flexible body, and increase circulation, benefiting the body, mind, and spirit as a whole. Ashtanga Yoga is taught in the tradition of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. Ashtanga, as we know it, is thought to have originated from the centuries-old Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. The term Ashtanga translates from Sanskrit as "eight-limbed. This eight-fold path offers not only a powerful physical practice, but also a template for a peaceful and healthy life. At Sun Dog Yoga Studio, we offer traditional Ashtanga Yoga. This form of yoga includes asana (postures), breath, alignment, and gazing point. We also offer a gentle form of Hatha yoga, which focuses on each posture individually in a slower-paced class. Additionally, we offer Prenatal Yoga and weekly Meditation classes. Be sure to check our schedule for special topic workshops led by highly experienced guest instructors.
