With summer coming, I want to give out some information on grooming your double coated dogs. Every year I get requests to shave them or cut them fairly short with the hopes that it will help with shedding, and keep them cool. This is NOT the case. I wanted to help owners understand why this is wrong, and what they can do instead.

Double coated dog breeds include: Husky, Alaskan Malamute, Golden Retriever, Labs, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Newfoundlands, Corgis, Border Collies, German Shepherd, etc.

After being shaved there is 50% chance that your dogs coat is permanently damaged in some way. It is a common misconception that shaving your double coated dogs will keep them cooler in the summer. This is NOT true. Shaving them destroys the natural airflow created in the space between their undercoat and guard coat. It removes the protective layer that protects them from the temperature, parasites, and sun damage. I attached a picture of the difference in shaved vs unshaved.

Another myth is that the dog no longer sheds, that’s also false as they do still shed, the hair is just smaller. Your dogs coat is also more likely to mat as it regrows. The texture of their coat will also change after shaving, the guard hairs can become more coarse than before the grooming.

What you can do: Get a deshedding treatment! This will help get rid of the dead undercoat which will cool and flatten the coat. A slight trim up to shape up their coat (the chest, butt, legs, feet) along with the deshedding will lighten their coat while keeping it healthy

Calling all animal lovers!!!
As many of you may know, the Bedford county humane society is in need of help due to the 90+ dogs they’ve rescued from a hoarding situation. Unfortunately, the dogs have been neglected, and the humane society is going to incur many expenses. Since most of my followers are dog lovers, I want to get the dog community together and raise some money or supplies to help the humane society!

For every $5 or per item of cleaning supplies donated, you’ll be entered in a chance to win a dog gift bundle (this includes a crewneck, engraved tumbler, candle, collar, bandana, treats, and paw balm! An estimated $95 value!). The bundle is customizable so if you win, you get to select your size, color, design, etc.

I’m collecting donations until 1/12/24. Donations can be made in person, or venmo . I will be delivering the donations on 1/13/24.
