RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Francine is powering up to become a category one hurricane overnight off the shores of Northeast Mexico, just south of the Valley. This storm will paralle…

{1:31pm} Tropical Storm Francine will remain over the Gulf of Mexico today and tomorrow. However, the outer part of this storm will be grazing the East of the RGV. This means tropical storm-force winds will be possible for the COAST tonight into tomorrow morning. Sustained wind speeds will be between 35-45mph and gusting up to 57mph.
Additionally, heavy rain bands will move over the lower Valley and the eastern part of the Mid-Valley. (Some rain will be possible for the upper Valley but the heavier rain will remain mostly out East). This could lead to localized flooding in Cameron and Willacy counties. Beach conditions will continue to be unfavorable tonight and tomorrow.
Francine now has 60mph sustained wind speeds. The latest track from the NHC forecasts the system to intensify to a hurricane category 1 by Tuesday evening as it continues to track Northeast.

Current Watches and Advisories:
-Tropical Storm Watch at the coast
-Coastal Flood Advisory till 7 pm Tuesday
-High Surf Advisory till 7 pm Tuesday
-Small Craft Advisory till 7 pm Tuesday
-Flood Watch till Wednesday for Cameron and Willacy

We will keep tracking more.

{9:58AM 9/9/2024 MONDAY} WE NOW HAVE TROPICAL STORM FRANCINE in the Gulf of Mexico. Right now the forecast calls for Francine to stay a tropical storm today, but strengthen to a category 1 hurricane by Tuesday evening. Notice the forecast cone, keep in mind THE CONE IS THE UNCERTAINTY OF THE FORECAST OF THE CENTER OF THE SYSTEM. Just because the Valley is 40 miles or so out of the cone doesn't mean we will not feel impacts from Francine, it does however give us an indication of WHO in the Valley will feel bigger impacts. Much like this morning, we're going to be tracking outer bands of moderate to heavy rainfall at times for closer to the coast. There will be light rainfall and even some clearing in between those bands. We're also looking at windy to gusty conditions for closer to the coast over the next couple of days. Stay tuned for more.

{11:30PM Sunday} ***The Weather Prediction Center has placed the Lower Valley and the eastern part of Hidalgo County under a Slight Risk of excessive rainfall for Monday and Tuesday. This means that scattered flash flooding is possible due to rains from Potential Tropical Cyclone Six in the Gulf. The western part of Hidalgo County and the eastern part of Starr County are under a Marginal Risk (lowest risk) for excessive rainfall Monday and Tuesday.

09/09/2024

{7:32AM 9/9/2024 MONDAY} Here's the latest on Potential Tropical Cyclone 6. Right now PTC 6 is staying disorganized with 50mph wind speeds. Because it's so disorganized we're feeling some effects from it this morning. Some rounds of moderate to heavy rainfall are possible today (not all day heavy rain) with gusty conditions closer to the coast. We're also looking at the latest track. Looks like it steers to the right into the next couple of days as a tropical storm, eventually becoming a cat. 1 hurricane by Wednesday morning. Keep in mind, impacts in the Valley with VARY BASED ON WHERE YOU LIVE. The biggest impacts will be felt closer to the coast, while Starr county may not see a lot of rain (if this track continues).
