Every year we get these ducks in our pool and every year the dogs go nuts whenever they land in the pool 😂
Do you get wild visitors to your yard? One thing you can do to keep your dogs safe is to have a reliable recall even in the face of wildlife. Right after snapping this I called everyone in so our sweet visitors can relax for a bit and everyone came the first time 🥰
Martini got in a lot of walking work today!
This morning we went on a short walk to the park where she was able to practice some down stays with all the kids running around. That is hard for such a young puppy!
In the afternoon we went on another walk since it’s expected to storm today and rain tomorrow. We headed down to the duck pond where my kids fed the ducks causing quite a stir. Martini was quite happy to just lay there and watch only getting excited during big commotion. Still she managed to only need to be replaced in a down stay twice! That’s pretty good if you ask me!
With all the commotion going on I did have to use a few redirection technique. One is shown where I’m running backwards to get her excited about me again. If that doesn’t work then I poke her in the butt to say hey! I’m still here pay attention to me! If neither of those work she’s in way over her head and she needs to just be taken out of there!
Overall I think we had a pretty successful day!
Miss Freya had her first bath today!
We used her medicated shampoo for her dandruff issues going on and we are supposed to use it every 3 days leaving it on for ten mins before washing off. Of course after our bath we had to have a nice cuddle and warm towel! Which lead to the best nap!
Here’s Martini’s progress report of the day!
We started the day a little slow so we did a little basics over breakfast. Then went out to enjoy a nice morning. As you can see she found an excellent stick! What I didn’t catch on video was the tumble mat covered in dew so when she went running to get the stick she slid across the tumble track. She was so embarrassed 🫣
Then we relaxed a little through the afternoon. When it cooled off we headed down to the duck pond. Got some good walking practice in with lots of natural distractions and some good stays near the pond.
Then we ended the day with some fun with our puppy friend 🥰
How many of y’all have a puppy that puts itself to bed?!
We have a divider in the crate to keep her in the size that is appropriate for her which will aid us in potty training. During the day we don’t have a towel to help with potty training but at night we give her a towel so she has something comfy to lay on! Plus if she has an accident on a towel it’s easy to clean up!
We are in love with our sweet Freya!

Martini had an excellent day full of training and more importantly fun!
First up we had to practice putting on our harness politely called “getting dressed”. Part of getting dressed is being held and restrained from your harness handle so periodically throughout the day I will grab her harness and ask her to sit r move a certain way so this isn’t weird!
Then… a walk! The rule is you stay next to me or slightly behind me. That’s where the treats happen! If she got ahead I just stopped and encouraged her to come back by me! Easy peasy!
Then we had fun opening our bark box! Lots of fun toys and treats inside! And of course puppy playtime!
Come dinner time we had to get serious. Not her favorite time as you can see. I use an anchor on the wall so if she gets up she can’t get very far. This protects me from getting jumped on at dinner and keeps her one less step out of trouble! If she got up I just guided her back.
Then we ended the night with some basics over dinner. When dogs are in training we can use their dinner for training! This is a perfect time to practice basic obedience. Tonight we practiced sit, down, stay, and come!
Well that was a big first full day of training! What do you guys think how did Martini do!?

Here we have sweet Darla!
As you can see by the back door she likes to scratch it up. Before mom replaces it we are teaching her an alternative behavior.
Ringing a doorbell!
We have put many hours and lots of practice into this and here you can see Darla touching it, hearing the ringing, and then she can go out!
There is also a doorbell outside that we are working towards. Eventually she will just ring the doorbell when she wants to go out and then when she’s ready to come back in.
I wanted to show y’all what to do when a dog is not co-operating and engaging in the behavior. All I did was give her a clear marker “No” to tell her that she did wrong and to try again. My criteria for this behavior now is touching the doorbell so she will get a no and I will re-ask her until she does what I’m asking provided she doesn’t get too frustrated. Here her tail is still going, she’s focused on me, and she’s still trying. She’s just being a little stubborn and trying to get her treat the easy way!
Patience. Patience. Patience!
She got there eventually with no problems. Now if your dog is showing signs of frustration he could have a roadblock going on and need a little extra help. Take a few steps back in your training and practice there for a while longer. It is not a big deal!
Does your dog have any behaviors it tries to fake out?
Chica has come so far for her nail trims! In the beginning it would require many spoonfuls of peanut butter distractions to get them done and we still had lots and lots of screaming!
Now as you can see she’s down to just some whining, a little wiggling, and a lots of calming signals. Calming signals are used to show stress, that the dog means no harm, and helps them to feel better.
In this video Chica shows quite a few signals and Mia shows some a little below the frame.
Chica shows us looking away, yawning, shaking, and lip licking. This is all making her feel better and to tell me she doesn’t want to fight! I know baby but you can’t have terribly long nails it’s not good for you!
Mia comes into frame because she’s responding to Chicas cries and the fact that I’m not backing off what I’m doing. Mia comes in at an arcing angle to say she’s coming in and means no harm. Then she lifts her legs and shows her belly to me also saying we mean no harm. It’s ok Mia I’m not hurting her she just thinks I am!
So what should you do if your dog shows calming signals. Well depends on the context.
If you are trying the signals are mild like these ones then you can continue training. If your dog escalates and gets to the point of not taking treats it’s too intense. Either stop training or make it easier.
If your dog is sending calming signals at you because what you are doing is stressful return the signal back. If your dog averts his gaze Avery yours. If he yawns yawn back.
If your dog is sending signals to something else and they aren’t being returned then place yourself in the middle between your dog and the other thing. This lets your dog know u have their back and will stand up for them. You can also leave the area.
The most important thing is that you remain calm and neutral!
Are you experiencing any stressful situations with your pup? Tell me about them and let’s see what we can change to fix it!
We’ve been working with Mia for a long time trying different strategies to help her overcome her anxiety. She’s not like most anxious dogs in that she doesn’t necessarily avoid you. She wants attention and she wants to please but she’s very conflicted with things going on around her.
You can see her working her with our target stick. We started by just having her reach out to the extended stick and touch the end. Now that she knows if she touches the target she gets a treat we can transition her into obedience behaviors.
Here we are teaching her to sit using the target. Notice how she does a few glances around the room? She’s unsure but quickly refocuses her attention on the target and manages a sit!
Always work on your dogs time and you will be able to learn anything!
So proud of you Mia!
