✨ Celebrating a behind-the-scenes queen! ✨
Help us in celebrating Tiffany's 1 year anniversary with Epping Road Veterinary Hospital!
Tiffany may not be seen around the front end of the hospital much, because she is running the show in the back. She is always so quick to answer the phones, sometimes we don't even realize they rang! She is a wonderful mom, friend, and co-worker, and we are all so lucky to have her here.
So help us in celebrating Tiffany! 🎉

Splashing into the long weekend with some outdoor water adventures? Review these key pet swimming safety tips:

💦 Check water conditions: rule out the presence of dangerous concerns like toxic algae and extreme currents
💧Use a life jacket: even strong swimmers can become fatigued, injured or be overpowered by changes in currents
💦 Check surroundings: there are many things in the environment that can harm pets during water activities such sharp barnacles, wildlife, boat propellers, etc.
💧Provide fresh drinking water: water okay’ed for swimming is not great for pets to drink in large quantities - salt water, chlorine, etc. can cause GI upset for most pets
💦 Take breaks: most pets have a hard time hitting their own ‘off switch’. Make sure to help your pet rest to avoid overexertion
💧Avoid sticks: It’s tempting to toss sticks for a game of water fetch, but we don’t recommend it. Sticks can cause serious harm to your pet’s mouth and GI tract. Instead, pack some floating water toys!
💦 Clean ears: Moisture trapped in the ear canal can lead to painful ear infections, so it’s important to clean your pet’s ears after every swimming adventure. Be sure to use a vet recommended ear flush!
💧Give a bath: certain swimming environments such as chlorine pools can irritate your pet’s skin, so it’s always a good idea to give a quick bath after swimming

Say hello to Rae 👋 This photo was taken during a joyful moment right after her mom and our behavior technician worked together with Rae to accomplish a fully cooperative blood draw for her annual preventative blood screen 🙌

Curious what ‘fully cooperative’ means? It means that Rae had a say in what was occurring and she actually chose, voluntarily, to “opt in” to each step of the procedure! Pretty cool, huh?

So how is that possible? 👉 Through cooperative care training techniques, Rae has learned that she is able to communicate with us during her veterinary care by using a chin-rest behavior: when her chin is down, that’s our sign to proceed and when she lifts her chin up, that’s our sign to pause. Her willingness to participate is rewarded and her requests for breaks are honored. Opportunities for decompression and play are built in to the process, to keep the overall experience positive.

Providing Rae with this level of agency over her own veterinary care has created predictability within an unpredictable environment, greatly reducing the fear, anxiety and stress she once felt in the veterinary setting. Not that long ago Rae was so worried during veterinary visits she needed the support of medication just to get in the door. Now, her veterinary visits are fun opportunities for her to show off her communication skills, all while strengthening the bond between her and the humans in her life!

We’re sending a big congratulations to Rae and her mom who have both worked so hard towards this goal 🥳👏

Curious how you can begin exploring cooperative care training with your pet? Let us know! We’d be happy to provide you with resources to help you bring cooperative care into your pet’s life!
