Yesterday we were able to help this hunter find his deer right before sunset! Liam was able to get through the searching done by the hunter earlier that day and show which direction the deer went afterward to his final bed. It's great to be out helping hunters again! Congrats to the hunter on a beautiful velvet!

As we come to an end to 2023 and our season we want to say Thank you to all the hunters who gave us a shot this year! We tried to do as many tracks as we could this season and met so many great people along the way! We will be working on improving ourselves in the off season to hopefully help even more hunters next year! Here are some of our favorite photos from the year! We can't wait to see what 2024 brings us!

Today we did our oldest and shortest track. This deer was shot on Friday night and we weren't able to track until Sunday night, we started around the 47 hour mark. We started a little before the last bed where the hunter had lost blood. Liam sniffed around for a little bit to determine which trail was the deer we were looking for. Liam followed the deers trail for about 30 yards, then took a 90 and air scented to him the rest of the way. We were very excited to reunite the hunter with his deer! Congrats to the hunter!

We were up early this morning again tracking deer. Liam knew exactly which way to go but mom kept double guessing him 🤦‍♀️ the nose knows everytime! With every track we learn something new (or relearn to always trust the dog).

Liam was out giving kisses this morning!

Hunter called us last night after being unsure of shot and finding watery blood. We went out this morning and Liam found him after one restart! He stayed in his first bed since the hunters didn't push him and waited for the dog!

Congrats to the hunter!

2nd successful recovery of the year!

We tracked for this hunter a few years ago as well, so he reached out to us for another track when he knew it wasn't a great hit. Hunter noticed it was gut shot and backed out right away and waited for us to come track 24 hours later to make sure we didn't push the deer. Liam started the track and found the deer in no time! Last 50 yards he air scented to him!
Congrats to the hunter on the great buck and thanks for trusting us to let the deer sit before tracking!

Just like that, we got our first recovery of the year! Deer was hit the night before and once hunter lost blood he backed out and called us! Liam made quick work of the different trails the deer could've taken and pin pointed where to go! We found a bloody bed and streaks of blood on the tall grass before we found him. Hunter was so glad and said he would've never found the deer without Liam! Congrats to the hunter!

With Rain in the forecast our reminder that we love rain. Don’t worry about your blood trail disappearing, dogs can still smell it. If you need to wait before retrieving your animal, don’t rush in due to rain.

Misconception, It has been raining so a dog will not be useful; actually a light rain helps to hold the scent. Some dogs are even able to track after heavy rains it is always better to call as soon as possible but if you can not get a tracking dog until it has been over 12 hrs then do not worry.

A track that is untouched is a lot easier for the dog to track successfully. Walking through the track just to find blood can move the scent around and make it harder for them to decipher. When in doubt, back out and call the tracking team for advice!

Good luck with season everyone! MN deer opener is just around the corner!

This morning we were finally able to get out and do a practice track. We've had a busy summer and the heat hasn't helped much either. Track was 12 hours old and only 400 yards with 2 90 degree turns and no beds. We used hooves only with our new BuckBrade Tracking Shoes!

What I learned with this practice track
- Liam is getting better with 90 degree turns the more we do them (first turn he blew threw but corrected himself after a little bit and searched for the scent again)
- In the past if Liam marks on something this typically means he is off the track and I need to reset him. Today he showed me that although he was off the track he new exactly where to pick it back up and he won't mark on the track
- Although it is early in the morning it is still hot and as seen toward the end of the track Liam was getting a little hot, so I should've offered him water and had him start where he was on the track. I believe this is why he circled a few times in the last 80 yards of the track as well
- Our "leave it" command is still solid. Although Liam knows he is tracking a deer, a few times he got distracted by frogs and mice that were in the grass, but each time he was told to "leave it" he left the critter alone and continued the track!
- As always- Trust the dog because the nose knows. This track wasn't marked much but if needed it was outlined on my phone as well. There were a few times I wondered if I should restart Liam based on his head and tail position but each time he reset himself without my help

There is always something to learn, whether it is a practice track or a real track. Every single time this boy teaches me something new and amazes me with what he can do. At the end he did play some tug with the hide and got to carry it back to the car as his reward too!

We are 1 month away from our season starting!

Liam walking his reward back to the car. He did great with his practice track that was 3/4 a mile, 4 90 degree turns and 2 beds! Only 1 restart was needed! We definitely need to work on our 90 degree turns more but practice makes us better!

Post track hide tug reward! This was shortly after being called off a rabbit halfway through the track. We continue to work on our tracking and drive with the hide tugging during our off season!
