Answers to Heartworm quiz

1. False

While the immature heartworm larva is microscopic adult heartworms can grown up to a foot long. The spaghetti looking worms gather in your pets’ heart and lungs causing inflammation and blood flow blockage.

2. True- They are not the preferred hosts for the heartworm parasite, cats usually only harbor 1-2 worms where as dogs can have Hundreds. Heartworm infected cats show a wider range of signs and may vomit, lose weight, cough, struggle to breath as they develop heartworm associated respiratory disease (HARD)and sometime without warning heartworm infected cats suddenly die.

3. False-Heartworm disease progresses slowly in dogs. A heartworm dog that carries adult heartworms in its heart and lungs may not show any signs at first but will then begin to cough, have decrease exercise tolerance and lose weight, as the number of adult worms increases and infection becomes severe fluid builds up causing heart failure.

4. False- If caught early stage1-2 the prognosis is good for recovery and the damage to the heart and blood vessels can heal with time and treatment. In Stage 3 dogs have a higher complication risk but still have a good prognosis for recovery. At stage 4 because dogs usually have advance organ failure the prognosis is guarded at best.

5. True-With once a month chewable heartworm preventatives such as HeartGard, Simparica Trio or a once every 6m-12 month injectable Pro Heart you can protect your pet from heart-worm disease.
