Quality Bengal Kittens

One of the ways I try to serve the Bengal breed is through education.

Over the past several years, I have been working on an updated Bengal Breed Seminar for TICA. The project became much larger than I originally anticipated, but I have always believed that understanding the why behind something helps us better understand the what.

The seminar explores why nature shaped small forest-dwelling cats the way she did and how those natural adaptations help explain the Bengal’s structure and the reasoning behind the Bengal Standard.

Many breeders, judges, and exhibitors generously contributed to the seminar and I am grateful for their help.

Fair warning: this is a deep dive rather than a quick overview.

Bengals may be classified as tabbies, but their pattern is anything but typical.

While many tabbies have striped legs, the preferred look in Bengals is spotting that continues down the legs.

It’s one of the details that helps create that wild, camouflaging pattern the breed is known for.

When the spotting carries through the entire body, it gives a more cohesive and striking appearance.

Cats thrive on routine more than most people realize.

When something changes—eating less, playing less, hiding more—it’s easy to assume it’s just a mood.

But changes in routine are often the first sign that something isn’t right.

Bengals, especially, rely on consistency. When their normal patterns shift, it’s worth paying attention.

Small changes can be early indicators of illness, stress, or discomfort.

The sooner you notice, the sooner you can address it.

If your cat has been acting differently, don’t ignore it—start asking why.

The Bengal breed continued to evolve as dedicated breeders refined new colors and traits.

In 1990, Gene Ducote worked with the Burmese cattery Nola to help develop the first sepia Bengals.

That work led to Nola Kotton Pickin, the first sepia Bengal.

If you want your cat to use a scratching post, what you do after they use it matters.

Cats repeat behaviors that are rewarding.

When your cat scratches in the right place, immediately reward them with praise, attention, or a small treat.

That positive association helps them understand they’ve made the right choice.

Over time, they’ll start to seek out the scratching post on their own.

Consistency is what makes the difference.
