Frankie the Mbu pufferfish came to VCA Noyes for a teeth trim. Frankie had developed trouble eating due to his teeth overgrowing. After careful handling from Caitlin and Lael our nursing staff and small and precise adjustments from Dr. Zimmerman Frankie is feeling much better. We LOVED learning about his big personality and seeing the love his owners give him.

According to the Tennesse Aquarium, "The giant freshwater puffer, also known as the Mbu Puffer and the Giant Green Puffer, is a carnivorous fish that prefers to dine on crunchy foods such as mollusks and crustaceans to help prevent tooth overgrowth. Like all of its relatives, it is capable of inflating itself with water or air when stressed or otherwise frightened. Puffers also have a few other interesting adaptations. They are one of the few fish species in the world that can actually blink or close their eyes. Their beak-like mouthparts which are used to crush shelled invertebrates are formed by the fusing of two teeth from each jaw. Additionally, puffers have the ability to change their color depending on their mood or surroundings.

Wow, happy 10th Anniversary to our Veterinary Assistant Nicole!

With her many years of experience, Nicole has developed an affinity for handling very nervous pets. They come into the hospital fearful and leave much more comfortable having forged a special bond with her. She has an array of pets at home; a hampster, 2 cats, and a snake. When she is not caring for her small zoo she is reading and playing with her young son and husband.

We are so excited to welcome Dr. Raap to the VCA Noyes team!

Dr. Raap earned her Bachelor of Science at Illinois State University. She earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Madison-Wisconsin in 2024. During this time she found a passion for feline medicine, ophthalmology, and cardiology.

She is a local girl who grew up in Dundee and attended Dundee Crown High School. When she is not working you can find her reading a good book with her feline fur babies Hunter and Maple. Or gardening with her husband and spending time with family and friends.

Leptospirosis is a dangerous, and potentially deadly, bacterial disease that can be harmful to both humans and animals.

Leptospirosis damages the kidneys and liver of dogs, humans, and other animals, but is only rarely seen in cats. It is spread through the urine of infected dogs, squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, opossums, rodents, and other common wildlife.

Vaccination is the best way to prevent leptospirosis. Your dog can become infected by drinking, swimming, walking through contaminated water or soil, or consuming wildlife such as chipmunks, rats, and mice.

If you ever notice unusual symptoms in your pet, we are here to help.
