A PSA to the community regarding microchips.
1. If you adopt from a shelter, make sure you update the chip information. We cannot contact owners that leave no forwarding information(though sometimes our amazing staff, through very hard work are able to track down the proper people).Even if by some miracle, we do find a lead, reunification still requires contact from the registered chip owner.
2. We have no legal ownership over a pet just because it has a chip. Possession is 9/10ths. We are not legally allowed to contact the person on the chip file without permission from the person in possession of the pet. We hate this as much as the public does.
3. Even if we are given permission to contact an owner from a found chip, we are not allowed to give out the finders information without their permission. There are laws we must follow.
4. Microchips are very useful, however, there are limits.
