REMINDER: IF YOU FIND A FAWN, LEAVE IT ALONE
It's that time of year again when white-tailed deer fawns are showing up in yards and hayfields, and concerned citizens want to know how to help. In almost all cases, the best way to help is to simply give the fawn space and leave it alone.

Concerned people sometimes pick up animals that they think are orphaned. Most such "orphans" that well-intentioned citizens "rescue" every spring should have been left alone. Most wild animals will not abandon their young, but they do leave them alone for long periods of time.

Fawns, born from May through July, are purposely left alone by their mothers. Female deer, called does, stay away from the fawns to avoid leading predators to their location. The white-spotted coat camouflages a fawn as it lies motionless in vegetation. Young fawns generally will not try to run away when they are approached.

Does will return several times each day to move and/or feed their young. You probably will not see the doe at all since she only stays to feed the fawn for just a few minutes before leaving it alone again. If less than 24 hours have passed since a fawn has been "rescued," the fawn should be taken back and released at the exact same location where it was found. After returning the fawn, immediately leave the area and do not wait for the doe to return. The doe will not come back for the fawn if a human is nearby.

If a wild animal has been injured or truly orphaned, do not take matters into your own hands. You may locate a licensed wildlife rehabilitator by calling the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) toll-free wildlife conflict helpline at 1-855-571-9003, 8:00AM-4:30PM, Monday through Friday or visit the DWR website at: dwr.virginia.gov/wildlife/injured/rehabilitators/.

Raising a wild animal in captivity is illegal unless you have a DWR wildlife rehabilitation permit. Each animal's nutritional, housing, and handling requirements are very specific and must be met if they have any chance of survival. With even the best professional care possible, the survival rate of rehabilitated fawns and many other animals is very low. The best advice for someone who wants to help wildlife is to keep it wild. Once people interfere, we reduce the opportunity for animals to receive natural care and we increase the risk of harming our wildlife heritage.

We have our Autogenous Pinkeye Vaccine in stock for working your cattle this Spring!

An article published in Progressive Cattleman stated that Pinkeye costs the cattle industry $150 million per year. Treatment costs per head average $100 by the time medicine and labor are taken into consideration.

Be proactive this year to minimize pinkeye outbreaks in your herd! Our vaccine contains local isolates of Moraxella bovis and Moraxella bovoculi, the two primary bacteria responsible for pinkeye.

While you are in, ask us about our other autogenous vaccines we have available!

Virginia State Veterinarian Approves Entry of Santa’s Reindeer into Virginia on December 24
Dr. Charlie Broaddus, State Veterinarian with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), in collaboration with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), has issued a permit to Nicolas “Santa” Claus, of the North Pole, to bring his herd of “eight tiny reindeer” and one additional rare red-nosed reindeer into Virginia on the evening of Dec. 24. While the USDA regulates the international movement of animals, the VDACS Office of Veterinary Services regulates the movement of animals into the Commonwealth of Virginia. DWR is charged with the management of the state's wildlife resources.

All ruminants entering Virginia must bear identification, and the identification number must be noted on the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI). Identification can be an ear tag issued by a state or federal entity, or other forms of identification approved by the State Veterinarian, and is critically important in tracing animals in the event of a significant disease outbreak. As the importation of deer into Virginia is generally prohibited, the State Veterinarian collaborated with DWR to issue the permit. A DWR permit is required to possess any member of the deer family in Virginia.

“Santa travels to Virginia each year with his herd of reindeer, and while his visit is brief, it is still vitally important to Virginia’s agricultural industry that the reindeer are safe and healthy. Santa takes great care of his herd and I am happy to issue an approved permit,” said Dr. Broaddus.

In discussing this approval, Santa noted that, “I love delivering Christmas presents to the Commonwealth. Virginia farmers produce some of the best products in the world. I especially enjoy the milk and eggnog and my reindeer really love Virginia-grown carrots and apples.”

We are so happy to see Dr. Gambill back in action after welcoming her 2nd baby boy, Carson into the world in July! We put her right to work this afternoon removing an infected naval.

With the fall calving season in full swing, make sure you dip navals and control flies on new born calves. 🐄

Dr. Gambill will be working on Monday’s and Thursday’s, so be sure to call and schedule an appointment to see her! 😁

As you're making plans for the colder weather ahead, you may be considering purchasing round bales for your horses due to their lower cost and greater convenience for feeding pastured animals.

While well-managed/stored round bales can still be a safe option for your horses, there are a few things you should be aware of — in particular, the increased risk of botulism, a rapidly progressive neurologic disease with high mortality caused by the toxins produced by the bacterium "Clostridium botulinum.” Prevention of this disease through vaccination is critical, especially in areas where the condition is prevalent (such as Kentucky, Ohio, Maryland, Pennsylvania, California, and Tennessee).

Regardless of the type of hay that best suits your needs, always remember that not all hay is created equal. Have your hay tested for nutrient content to ensure it meets your animals' nutritional needs; check for mold, dust, and poisonous weeds before feeding.

As in all horse health issues, your local veterinarian is your best source of information. Consult your horse doctor on best practices when feeding hay this winter, and about botulism prevention and treatment.

More information on botulism is available on our website at https://tinyurl.com/vx8uxdh9
