Today is National Dress Up Your Pet Day! Although seeing pets in cute outfits is adorable, sometimes there is a reason behind their fashion! Some pets may have medical concerns that require them to wear certain clothes. These may include needing to cover their skin if they have severe allergies, covering their incision after surgery, or even just wearing shirts or thunder jackets to help with anxiety during stressful situations. Other times, they may wear clothes to protect them while outside, such as sweaters to help them during the harsh winter elements, booties to protect them from the hot asphalt during summer, or small dogs may even wear spiky vests to help keep them safe from predators such as hawks or other big birds. Some dogs even have jobs that require them to wear certain outfits, such as service animals, or police K9’s. Do you have a pet that wears clothes? Post a photo of them in our comments!

Is your pet overweight? Pet Obesity can cause lots of problems for the pet overtime, especially as they get older. Once the pet has been diagnosed with any of these problems, they are typically long term or lifelong issues. The best way to prevent them, is for your pet to lose weight before the problems begin. The new year is a great time to start their weight loss journey. It’s important to ensure the pet isn’t getting overfed on kibble, treats, or human food, and that they are maintaining a healthy amount of exercise for their age and breed. If you have concerns that your pet may be developing any of these issues, you should get them scheduled to be seen with their primary doctor as soon as possible. Give us a call at (623) 934-7243 to schedule.

Most pets love being a part of the holiday celebrations and receiving their own share of christmas presents. However, it’s important to make sure the toys they receive are safe for them before allowing them to go at it! It’s also extra important to inspect the toys occasionally to make sure nothing has been chewed off or torn, as they can easily become choking hazards. Here are a few tips to make sure your pets' Christmas is just as safe as it is fun.

For dogs and cats, the holidays can contain lots of new things around the house that they may not see very often. This can lead to them getting curious and getting into things, when they may not usually. Here are a few things to make sure they keep their paws off of. These can be choking hazards, contain toxic chemicals, or cause other internal issues. If you think your pet may have got into something they shouldn't have, take them to a pet emergency room immediately. The emergency room closest to us is AVECCC. You can contact them at (480) 462-1700, and they are located at 7823 W Golden Ln. Peoria, Az 85345.

With Thanksgiving around the corner, it’s important to know what can be toxic for your pet. Although you may want to include the 4-legged family members in holiday dinner, it’s probably best to just stick with their regular dog kibble. Human food and table scraps can cause them some GI upset, which isn’t very fun for anyone to deal with. However, there are some other foods that are toxic and can cause some bigger issues such as kidney failure, pancreatitis, etc. It is also important that your pet doesn’t get any bones or meat with bones in it. They are often given to them as a treat or a toy to play with, but they can splinter or break which can cause a choking hazard, or in some cases, a foreign body.

It is commonly believed that cats came to North America with Cristopher Columbus. Oftentimes cats were welcome onto cargo ships to help with vermin and prevent disease. This helped to keep the sailors' food supply from being invaded by rodents as well as prevented them from chewing on important ropes and things around the ship. From that point, they continued to domesticate themselves, and overtime were welcomed into homes as house pets.

National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week is the first week of November. It is dedicated to honoring the shelters and dedicated individuals that help provide a safe place for animals in need. The holiday was created to help acknowledge the shelter workers and volunteers that spend lots of time working to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome thousands of pets. It is also a great time to bring awareness that many shelters are overrun with pets and need the support of their local community to help keep the animals healthy and to find them their forever homes.

November is Pet Diabetes Awareness Month. This can be much more common than people expect. Typical symptoms of diabetes in cats and dogs include drinking water excessively, urinating more than normal, losing weight while maintaining a good appetite, and acting lethargic. If you notice your pet experiencing any of these symptoms, you should get them scheduled to be seen right away with their primary veterinarian. Depending on the severity of the situation, some treatments include feeding prescription food, giving pills daily, or giving insulin throughout the day. In order to best prevent diabetes in your pet, it is recommended that they maintain a healthy weight, are fed a high-quality diet, and avoid overfeeding them. We also recommend getting them checked out annually, as well as getting blood work done at least once a year. This helps us to catch any potential issues early and get them started with some preventative treatment.
