The Butterfly House is Now Open! Our exhibit was visited by Little Miss Monarch today proudly holding a Monarch she befriended!
We are back on the road for the winter chasing the butterflies south. Follow for more of our general travel content.
This is the largest Florida viceroy I’ve ever raised! Florida Viceroys mimic the Queen butterfly similar to the way Eastern Viceroys mimic the Monarch. Both are Mullerian mimics. This particular viceroy is actually larger then the queens pictured next to it.
Fresh Florida Viceroy emerged today in our vanbulance! This subspecies has beautiful dark rich coloration!
This Cithaerias menander is probably the hardest butterfly I’ve ever caught. It flies super close to the ground in the thick understory of the forest and as it flies all you are able to see is the occasional flash of pink as it disappears.
Here’s a small patch butterfly on the cutest girl alive aka my wife! This is at our friends butterfly house in Boquete Panama and is one of coolest places in the world to visit.
This is the White Witch moth of legends. The largest moth in the world! Can’t believe I finally got to see it! This specimen came into a light trap at our friends house
What a crazy cricket! Anyone want to suggest an ID i’d appreciate it. Orthoptera are not my specialty but I think I’ll post a bunch of katydids in the next post one was bigger than this one!
Hanging lots of tropical pupa in Costa Rica today!
These are a few wild butterflies that we saw and got pictures of in Costa Rica.
Here’s some highlights of a Costa Rica night poke around! Which is your favorite?
Banded Peacock (Anartia fatima) nectarine on a red zinia.
Some fun giant moths from last nights light trap
Costa Rica light trap last night! Here’s what we saw!
Battus polydamas or Polydamas swallowtails are a common species found on pipevine in Florida. Here’s one of three handfuls we found this morning.
Here's my wife harvesting pupa from the lab. We run a large scale monarch breeding facility on our farm, where we raise disease free monarch to be used in releases and exhibits.
Specimens available from this year's batch contact me for pricing. We have Cecropias, Monarchs, and pictured here are a rare hybrid between Hyalophora cecropia and columbia.
White admirals have begun to eclose. These have always been my favorite of our native butterflies. We raised and overwintered our first batch last year. Hopefully we'll be getting lots of eggs from these guys soon!
Did you know that butterfly farms around the world protect many endangered species and ecosystems? Butterfly farms do this by being an economic and sustainable alternative to logging and destructive agriculture, not to mention supplying ethically raised endangered butterflies. By farming these butterflies, they are protecting and restoring their butterflies’ habitats instead of plowing them up. Support butterfly farms they are the greatest way to protect and learn more about the butterflies we love!
Happy it is a privilege to be stewards of this amazing world God created! This picture has two of my favorite females! My wifey and a female Io moth that started my lineage of Io moths.
Here is a Great Southern White that laid eggs for me while we were in Florida. Later we dropped them off at a friend's butterfly farm where they are still going through generation after generation.
Did you know that you can release butterflies at funerals, memorials, special events and wedding? If you’re interested in planning a butterfly release, but don’t know how it works, don’t hesitate to contact me! We can help you plan a successful butterfly release. This is a photo I took of Monarchs being released from a release box; the other way butterflies are commonly released is with individual release envelopes, this method allows guests to have a more personal experience.
Butterfly Dans was another butterfly farm we visited this winter. This is the largest butterfly farm we've seen in the country. Here you're looking at a mixed species ovipositing facility. Each enclosure contains a handful of butterflies and is equipped with nectar sources and a small amount of host plant for the butterflies to lay on.
While walking through a hammock in the Florida Keys, we ran into this massive phasmid, and I literally mean ran into! This thing was dangling head height smack dab in the middle of the path.
Corky Stem Pasion is one of the native host plants for Zebra longwings and Gulf Fritillaries. Did you know that it is heterophyllous? meaning it has different shaped leaves on the same plant to confuse the butterflies. All these leaves in the picture are from the same vine.

What is this? These are male cecropias swarming a cage of females. Because cecropia moths do not eat as adults they have a limited amount of energy. Therefore, the female moth will typically not fly until she has mated. That means the male moth has to find her. Believe it or not he finds her by smell. The female moth will secrete a smelly pheromone from her abdomen that will waft away in the night air and travel several miles. Any male moths that detect the musty smell with their large feather antennas can follow it back to the female. In this way the female cecropia can conserve her limited energy for laying eggs. Fun fact: the antenna of the cecropia is one of the most powerful chemosensory organs in the world. Here's a clip from this spring. Moth nights are pretty epic just a light and a bed sheet and wow. It's pretty awesome that moths are attracted to light, this allows us to observe there amazing diversity. The fact is that artificial light also have a huge impact on moths. Studies have shown that a single light will disrupt their ability to breed and feed. This results in a lot of moths never producing progeny before they die. This has very noticable impacts. Without moths we lose species of plants that depend on them for pollination as well as animals that depend on them for food. If possible turn off your lights and get motion sensors for the ones that are used frequently. #mothsofinstagram #mothnight #lighttrap #blacklight #mothlight #entomology #naturevideos #wildlifevideos #conservation #epic #wildlife #buterfly #discover #discovery #giantsilkmoth #cecropia #lunamoth #silkmoth #inthewoods #nightphotography #nightlife
I think I can get away with another cicada post. Honestly cicadas have never been my thing but I've just been so fortunate to find yet another nymph. I've always been fascinated by butterflies and moths emergence and I've never really paid attention to how other insects did it. With the cicadas they go through incomplete metamorphosis which means when they become an adult it's just another molting of the skin. The only difference is the fully developed wings, which have to be inflated upon molting. Unlike a butterfly emerging, this whole process of molting takes a long time (on the scale of hours). #cicada #cicadas #entomology #wildlifevideos #wildlifephotography #naturevideos #wildanimals #insectsofinstagram #insect #nymph #insects #designedfordiscovery #discover #discovery #fasinating #emergence #metamorphosis #exploremore #explorepage #wow #greenart #biophilia #biology #lifecycle
