The 4th Stresses out so many dogs, please remember in Great Bend it is the 4th ONLY!!! This morning the Barton County Commissioners allowed extra days this year for personal fireworks (Sunday and Monday Only) HOWEVER, this is NOT allowed within the city limits of Great Bend. Therefore, this is your friendly reminder, FIREWORKS ARE ONLY ALLOWED IN TOWN ON THE 4TH! We do hope you come celebrate with us and watch at the Expo Grounds on July 3rd for the big community fireworks display! Thank you!

The city personnel has personally walked through the dog park and did not see any sticker. They will be overseeding this fall and the dog park will be closed for an unknown period of time. This is necessary to improvements. If you have any concerns please contact the city. They are in charge of this. I think this is a needed improvement and look forward to next year with lots of green grass.

Bark at the Water Park is Saturday, Aug. 23rd from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. I could use some help if some volunteers would like to. We need someone to sit at the table in the entry way to collect money and someone to take turns "patrolling" the pool area. Contact RaShann Southard if you can help please!!

Apparently there have been some issues at the Dog Park. One are the stickers. I have repeated asked for them to spray but apparently they don't have time. If everyone would be willing to call Terry Hoff at the city and let them know about the issues with the stickers that would be great. Usually, change happens when enough people use their voices.
Secondly, apparently there have been some arguments happen there also concerning the dogs. Most of the long timers know that disagreements will happen occasionally between dogs. Usually putting them on lead and letting them take a break (BOTH dogs) can fix the issue. Just take them to opposite ends of the park and then take them off lead after they have had a chance to calm down. If it continues, the dog that is causing the issue should leave the dog park. Sometimes, it is just a bad day for the dog and the next time he may be just fine. But, again. the rule of thumb is the dog causing the issue leaves. If anyone sees this going on, please feel free to kindly tell them the rule of thumb. There is no reason to be hateful or disrespectful when telling them. If the person will not leave, then call the police department or call me (RaShann) or Mindy Hickel. We need to make this a pleasant experience for everyone. Calling people names, bullying, etc. should not happen. We are all adults and these issues should be resolved like adults. Thank you!!

We are considering putting up fencing for a small dog area at the Dog Park. This will not be cheap, and before it is decided upon I would like to get some input from the little dog owners as to whether or not you would use this area. I know big dogs can be scary, especially one of mine, she is a boxer so she "boxes" and plays rough. She loves to chase and will roll a little dog, not to harm them, but just playing rough. I know many owners don't appreciate this, I don't blame them, and she is not the only big dog out there that is a rough player. So, in order to have a safe place for little dogs to play, we are considering a special area for them. PLEASE SHARE THIS POST WITH ANY SMALL DOG OWNERS YOU KNOW AND POST INPUT!! I need to hear the yay or nays on this issue. This dog park is for EVERYONE, and I want everyone to be able to go out and enjoy it!

Hi folks! I would like to discuss a situation that I have been told about at the Dog Park. I am not there much this time of year, as my boxers can't take the heat, but I have been told about some aggressive dogs that have been out there. I personally encountered two, and I'm sure you all know these dogs and their owner. I was charged by both dogs with teeth bared and growling. I was then told about other dogs being attacked by them. Another case, I was told an individual was actually bitten by a dog out there. The owner had no tag on this dog and actually got mad when confronted about the bite. So, there will be a list made of individuals with aggressive dogs. By aggressive, I mean attacking humans and other dogs. Many dogs play rough, I happen to have one. They do NOT mean to fight, they just play hard and rough. These are not what I am talking about. I am talking about full out attack. These people will be warned and possibly banned from the dog park. I will post a list on the bulletin board with names of dogs/owners who are banned and I am hoping the regulars and responsible dog owners will call them out. I have placed my phone number on this page so feel free to call me if you have any question or have seen or been involved in an issue with an aggressive dog at the dog park. Also, if you see a dog with NO RABIES TAG or individuals EATING at the dog park, please call them out on this. We all need to work together to make this Dog Park a safe and fun place to be and it will take ALL of us to do it! Thank you! - RaShann

Please be aware there was a puppy found at the dog park with the Parvo Virus this morning. It had to be euthanized. Make sure any dog you take out there is vaccinated. Please spread the word.

WNC Boxer Rescue - Asheville Based 501 C(3) Non Profit Animal Rescue

I have a favor to ask all of my dog park friends. There is a rescue in N.C. that is struggling right now, it is WNC Boxer Rescue. Hard times for him personally, and then Sandy hit. If everyone could just donate at least $5 dollar to help him with food for the boxers he has at his rescue ranch I would greatly appreciate. I know him, he has helped with Daniel's adoption and another I worked on. He is an amazing guy who gives his last penny to those dogs. PLEASE CAN WE HELP HIM IN HIS TIME OF DESPERATE NEED?? Go to http://www.wncboxerrescue.org/ and there is a place to click that says "make a donation". THANK YOU!!!

Western North Carolina Boxer Rescue specializes in saving boxers in and around the Asheville area.
