Happy Valentine's Day to little Mabel! 🩷
Mabel and Minnie were rescued from the kaporos sacrifice ritual in New York last September. They are the sweetest babies!! Very different personalities, they get along well with our red hens, Fire and Apple, and are currently living with them. They love people and Mabel especially, will follow me around everywhere! 🥰

I caught Georgie licking her lips after eating a carrot treat. Look how muddy she is! It's been a rainy day... But that shouldn't stop us from spending time outside. Hiking by the river always helps to brighten my spirits. The holidays can be a stressful and emotional time, spending time in nature helps! 😘

Here is Basil, handsome as ever!Three years ago, Basil was rescued from a small dairy farm where he was going to be "disposed of" because he was a boy. Here he enjoys getting brushed, lays in the sun with his big brother, and comes over to give licks when volunteers are working in the barn. We love him! What can you do to help? Encourage everyone to try plant based milk! There are lots of options, they are delicious, and we can all help save more lives of boys like Basil!

A peek into what's going on in our garden this month! We have lemon drop watermelon, a personal sized watermelon that I can't wait to taste! The second photo is an Indian cucumber, it tastes great picked when yellow but will turn brown when fully ripe. They are smaller in size than the standard cuke, but I really like them. And I love the little 4x4 patch of glass gem corn growing in the corner! Something about seeing it so strong and tall...and it brings back memories of driving past fields of corn on the way to the beach. These are some new varieties we tried from
I hope everyone is inspired to grow some food!!

A quote from a fellow hen lover. We love seeing the special connections between humans and their hens.❤️
“When my family adopted chickens at the beginning of last Summer, I didn’t anticipate the bonds that I would form with them over such a short time. The chickies, as I call them, have given me a new way to connect with nature and consider my approach to life. Spending time in their run and learning their favorite foods and treats (blueberries) gives me a moment of solace in my everyday life. My most treasured moments have involved eating dinner as the sun sets behind their coop, and painting while they roam free around me. The chickies are important members of our family, sometimes they even sleep in my bedroom when they need extra love! I couldn’t imagine anyone doing harm to these gentle creatures”

Happy Sunday! As we prepare to welcome the hens to their new sanctuary, we are working hard to provide them with all the necessities to live comfortably here at Paddington's Farm. We've added much needed items to our amazon wishlist which can be found at paddingtonsfarm.org!

For day two of our fundraiser, we thought we'd give our followers an idea of what a day in the life of a chicken looks like! Each morning our girls will wake up safe and sound in their coop, where they will get a drink of water, stretch their legs, and nestle around in the shavings. The automatic door will open after the sun rises and they will be able to enjoy their large 12ft x 45ft predator proof run during the day. These guys will be able to experience grass under their feet and freedom to catch bugs and dig up the ground. When we are out in the garden, they will be too. They'll forage for feed, and fresh greens from the garden! While they are exploring their new space, they will be able to take a hardy dust bath, and enjoy some grit to strengthen their bones and support digestion! Each day, their coop will be cleaned out so that the hens will have fresh, clean bedding to relax in. All of the dirty bedding will go straight into our compost bin, nothing goes to waste in our Paddington's Farm ecosystem! After a day of enjoying their safe space to socialize, explore and enjoy life as a chicken, the girls will return to their coop for the night where they will be safe from roaming predators.

We are working very hard to prepare for the hens arrival in the next 9! days, so that they can experience life on a kind farm! We were warned that they likely have worms and other parasites and they will definitely need medical attention. We ask that you please consider donating to our Venmo @ paddingtons-farm or through our PayPal link on paddingtonsfarm.org

Virginia is making headway in the world of sustainability! In March, Governor Northam signed an executive order phasing out single-use plastics at state agencies. We’ve slowly seen the effects of the order in places of higher education as they discontinue disposable single-use plastics. We’re so glad to see sustainability efforts at the state level as we continue our efforts at Paddington’s Farm! We love our reusable straws, composting, and reusing glass where we can!
