We have all heard reports on social media, as well as the news outlets about the mystery illness that affects our beloved dogs.
Of course, you know that we only board healthy, vaccinated dogs at our facility. We appreciate having customers who not only love their dogs, but are very conscientious about the Kennel population when they bring their pups to us. As we have said many times, Sally and I are not trained in veterinary medical arts, so we do not have a background in these issues to any great depth. This note is just going to discuss what we know so far and will review our protocols for your benefit.
The mystery illness is not Bordetella and the Bordetella vaccine will not protect your dog from this. The symptoms that we are looking for is any kind of respiratory distress. If your dog is wheezing or coughing, we ask that you keep your pup home and make other arrangements. We have a plan in place should one of the dogs in our care exhibit the symptoms but we aren’t prepared if there is a large scale breakout.
The mystery illness, from what we have read, looks to be an airborne illness. As most of you should know, we have installed air purification equipment, which removes 99% of the biologicals from the air. Because the temperatures are cooler and we are heating the building that means that the doors are closed and your pups are only breathing air that has run through our equipment. We feel this should help mitigate any contamination. We are also implementing a slightly different procedure when we let your dogs into the play yards. Yes, your dogs can go up to the fence and touch noses with the dogs in the adjacent yards but that is about the only contact that your dog will have with other dogs because we have never been the type of facility to have a playgroup where dogs interact with each other all day long.
Of course, your dogs kennel space is always sanitized prior to their stay.
In short, we’re doing the best we can.
