Such good horses at the ICC schooling show this weekend. Great start to the show season!
Just some happy faces from this week
So good!
I heard a great quote the other day that I've been thinking a lot about lately. "The most honest person in the room is the problem child".
When it comes to horses, they are naturally designed to be good liars. From a prey perspective, they're supposed to lie to predators about their physical and mental weaknesses, because their very survival depends upon it.
"Good" horses are good liars. They're stoic about physical ailments, they tolerate mistakes, and they can perform their duties without needing to be heard by their human handler, or requiring a lot of skill from a rider. These are horses we value a lot in our equestrian society, and they're great for many reasons.
Problem horses are very bad liars. They cannot just go on with life when they are hurt, or upset, or feeling like their needs are not acknowledged or met.
They either find somebody who understands that, or they are sent to a trainer who's main job is to teach them to learn to SUPPRESS this urge to constantly communicate their emotions and needs, effectively becoming better liars. Some horses can learn this, but the ones that cannot are labelled permanent problems, and often find themselves shuffled around.
But what happens if we begin to value communication over compliance? What if we prioritize the relationship before our egos, and trust before our human goals?
We can all agree that we would prefer to be in a meaningful human relationship that ivalues empathy to a different perspective/reality. Why wouldn't we consciously cultivate the same relationships with our equine partners? Would that not be beneficial for everyone?
The next time you find yourself making a binary judgement about your horse's behavior, pause for a moment instead and consider the root cause of it. What are they trying to communicate? How can you help meet their needs and build trust instead of prioritizing your ego in that moment and demanding compliance because you've arbitrarily decided you deserve it?
Quick girls trip to Reno for the pony Club convention
The Anatomy room at the United States pony club convention is fantastic!!
To all my neighborhood dirt bike and side by side friends: Happy New year!
Could you all please drive slow on the road past properties with horses, or pedestrians on the road, it is 100% dangerous and scary having people of all ages tearing up the road at high speeds right outside our yard . Girard street is not Glamis nor the Las Vegas speedway. 25 mph max please. Thank you for keeping the people and animals we love safe ❤️
So thankful for the crew here at Whitebrook Farm that keeps people taught, horses trained, stalls cleaned, and everything else that makes our farm run smoothly and happily. Thank you!
Adults and kids! We would love to teach you to ride
If you are a person who feels inspired by, or that your personal life goals or dreams are impacted by horses, please take a moment and weigh in on the Orange Coubty fair board’s decision to possibly demolish one of the only public boarding facilities in all of Orange County. Space for horses is disappearing and we must speak up for conservation and management so that people and horses can have a place to enjoy each other.

*CALL TO ACTION*
Friday the OC Fair board added a surprise agenda item "update" proposing canceling the current RFP process (securing a new operator), and instead demolish the EQC because the stables do not provide "enough" PUBLIC benefit (& that the "horse owners" are the ONLY ones who benefit, NOT the PUBLIC).
YOU, the PUBLIC, must tell the Fair Board the TRUTH.
So PLEASE, PLEASE:
1. ATTEND/SPEAK at THIS Thursday's (12/14) Fair Board meeting 9am at 88 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa, 92626 (Gate 4 on Arlington Dr). KIDS, too!!
2. CALL IN/ SPEAK at meeting via Zoom:

Horse management lesson: trailering and travel safety. Everyone learned how to properly load and unload horses
Never forget where you came from. 3 generations of horseing around here. I miss the cowboys who came before. But I am thankful for the love of horses they left us.
Thank you Bonnie Baumgartner for a great dressage clinic! It was to ride tests and get verbal feedback instead of just scores and written comments.
We got all the riding lessons done in time for Horse Management lesson AND a lot of rain. Nice to hear presentations in a warm dry place
Our Whitebrook Farm kids did amazing jobs at the Southern California Pony Club region Research Fair today. Their presentations were well thought out and articulated. They demonstrated responsibility and pride in their research projects. So proud. Congratulations everyone!
