❗️New World Screwworm Update and Treatment❗️

Check your pet daily for open wounds, scratches, or scabs, especially around the face, ears, and genitalia, as New World screwworm (NWS) flies lay eggs in any exposed flesh. Watch for rapidly enlarging wounds, foul odors (decaying flesh), pus or bloody discharge, white egg masses, and visible maggots hiding deep within the skin.

Adult screwworm flies are about the size of a common housefly (or slightly larger). They have orange eyes, a metallic blue or green body, and three dark stripes along their backs.

The US Food and Drug Administration has granted conditional approval for the following products for treatment of NWS in dogs:
•Credelio Quattro™-CA1 (lotilaner, moxidectin, praziquantel, pyrantel) – dogs, puppies

The US Food and Drug Administration has issued Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the following products for treatment of NWS in dogs and cats:
•NexGard® (afoxolaner) chewable tablets – dogs
•NexGard® COMBO (esafoxolaner, eprinomectin, praziquantel) topical – cats
•Credelio™ (lotilaner) chewable – dogs, puppies
•Credelio™ CAT (lotilaner) chewable – cats, kittens

There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding the screwworm. Please see the USDA’s website for more information. We will update as more information becomes available.
