👨🏽‍🌾Supporting local farmers is a political movement: when we support local farmers we are voting with our dollars and effectively defunding the “too big to fail” corporations who are using their influence to write laws that benefit them and create the revolving door between their businesses and the government agencies designed to protect us from them.

In the end it’s all about strengthening our local community. Getting to know your local farmers and supporting them financially strengthens the local food system.

🐖❤️ Learning that your local growers raise food with integrity means you don’t have to ask yourself questions about the quality of your food. In a world where our food system is too big to fail it makes more and more sense to fortify these local relationships.

Both terms stem from a desire to protect the Earth and nature but ultimately it is sustainability that considers how development will affect the 3 Ps.

👧🏽👦🏼People (Social Benefits/well-being)
🌏Planet (Environmental Health/Natural Resources)
💵Profit (Economic vitality)

People (corporations) will use these terms interchangeably but while a final product may be green, if the manufacturing, production process, and transportation requires a lot of energy (i.e. fossil fuels which are not a renewable resource) then it cannot be considered sustainable.

It is even debatable whether or not it is sustainable to buy a new car that might be “greener” than an old car because of the amount of energy and resources it takes to produce the new car. It is a very tricky situation we are in and it is important to do research before making decisions on purchases.

🚢 While the globalization of food has allowed the human species to survive and to an extent, thrive, and it is true that we probably would not see the advancements of society we have today without it, it is unrealistic and in fact irresponsible to think that we can rely on this one system alone.

❌It is unrealistic to believe that we can sustain this way of life forever.
🧑🏻‍🌾We must cultivate and encourage local food first. Relying on imported foods should be secondary to us…

I am grateful for all of our technological advancements since the industrial revolution. Our ability to grow more food than we can consume is truly unprecedented.

Unfortunately our progress is misguided in many ways. We are using nature as a tool without understanding our place in nature. We do not yet understand the delicate balance that allows for our species to thrive on our planet, and we thrive at the expense of ecosystems we rely on.

We must embrace nature as essential to our survival and tread lightly on the slippery slopes of our progress as custodians of our beautiful home. We are eminently lucky to be a part of the balance of life on this planet and if we are not cautious we might not survive here as the waves crash over the vestiges of our civilization. Without us nature will eventually reclaim its balance of our pastures. Vines will eventually pull down the powerlines and cover the glass and metal structures we hold dear.

Sustainability entails maintaining the balance of our ecosystems and respecting the soil that grows the food that sustains us.

Thanks for reading. IF YOU GOT THIS FAR, leave a 💚 in the comments!

I’m confident we can successfully navigate our growth and learn to be custodians of our planet.

And if you still feel the status quo is acceptable lets go fishing and eat some fish from the White River.

Did you know that some of our industrial farming practices remove nutrients from the soil without replacing them?

I know someone who purchased a farm that was used for chemically driven agriculture for so long that nothing would grow there until ridiculous amounts of inputs were added.

Perhaps the farmer was going through economic hardship and cannot afford the expense of inputs that need to be brought back into the soil for growing crops regeneratively.

However, with proper animal rotation, the manure goes along way to regenerating the soil.

Sadly, much of what we eat in this country creates a deficit for future generations harming the soil and waterways, and reducing the quality of what we are eating, this reducing our quality of life.

Let’s work with nature to use natural animal processes to create more soil and sequester carbon, reducing our need for corporate influence of our food systems.

Food is freedom.

It’s 2023 and I have some things to say that have been weighing heavy on my heart and soul. I would really appreciate your input.

Farming is a noble profession. When done correctly one becomes a custodian of our planet. These custodians are the farmers that I wish to support.

Farming can be destructive. Many pesticides and chemicals have been linked to terrible consequences for human, animal, fish, water and soil health.

My story with farming was a gradual realization that I wanted the best quality and best tasting food for my body. It turned into a healthy addiction that fueled my desire to learn more and helped me realize the planet needs more of us to farm WITH nature, to be a part OF nature, and not to try to USE natural processes for profit.

The overall current industrial farming practices focus on profit, not on our fragile ecosystems and are robbing future generations of healthy soil by “mining” nutrients from the soil and not replacing them. These nutrients leave the soil in the food, through erosion by wind and air exacerbated by these practices.

We need to use our technological advancements to heal the soil, heal our streams, rivers, lakes and oceans from this mess we are continuing to create. It’s not getting better.

One of my latest catchphrases is:

THE STATUS QUO MUST GO

Those who disagree and wish to continue on our current trajectory I encourage to come down to the White River for a swim. Then we should go fishing and do some campfire cooking.

It’ll be FUN.

In case you didn’t know… the White River is not safe for either of these activities like MANY waterways worldwide. Even fish from our Great Lakes are not recommended for consumption more than once a month.

This enrages me.

How do you feel about this problem we seem to be ignoring? Are we aware of this problem and complacent or are we ignorant?

Thanks for reading and participating in the conversation.

Puerto Rico. It was my second time in as many years to go and spend time with friends new and old. This is how I feel in Puerto Rico. Pretty much the whole time.

Hoping I will soon start a new chapter of my life between here and Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico needs farmers, and I hope to start a business there doing exactly what I do now, supporting the local farmers and economy in a way no other business can.

And yes, amazing foraging!
