Day 3 of befriending Moose the cat! Moose is a super sweet tabby that seems uncomfortable in the shelter. Every day he packs himself in the corner of his kennel to where he looks like a little square. 🥺 So, I decided he needed a friend, and I was going to be that for him! I've been working up to pet him fully, making sure he is comfortable with my touch so I don't freak him out any further. Today, he let me pet his chin, and I discovered he loves it! 🥰 I even got slow blinks from him! Moose tends to get overlooked because he appears "unfriendly" or "uninterested" in the kennel. Turns out, he's just shy and nervous. If you are looking for an affectionate cat who just needs a little time to open up, don't look past Moose. He may be the perfect fit for you! ❤️ #sheltercat #adoptablecat #iacs #chinscritches

Meet the delightful and affectionate Oscar! If you’re in search of a cuddle buddy who will shower you with 💋kisses💋, Oscar is the perfect match. He’s a curious explorer who loves to sniff out every nook and cranny. Food motivates him, and he’s always eager for treats. This young pup has been a bit stressed in the kennel environment, so we’ve given him a break by moving him into an office, where he’s been doing much better. We’re hoping to find him a loving home where he can truly relax and enjoy discovering his new surroundings. Could you be the one to give Oscar the home he’s dreaming of? 🏡

Erik had a fantastic time on his recent day out, showcasing his fun-loving and sweet nature along with his excellent manners. This 3-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback has been at the shelter for over three months and would make an ideal companion for someone who enjoys ball games and long walks.
During his outing, Erik explored Garfield Park, visited a farmers market, played fetch, and hiked at Fort Harrison State Park. By the end of the hike, he even hopped up on a bench for a hug, as if to say, "Thanks for a great day!"
Erik is a superb car rider, calm and attentive as he gazed out the window. He was unfazed by other dogs during our walks and loved stretching his legs with some backyard fetch, expertly retrieving and dropping the ball or resting when needed. Erik is equally content being active or relaxing in the shade. He is gentle with treats, adores back scratches, and is generous with kisses and cuddles (but only when invited). His focus on our walks suggests he could be an excellent running partner.
If you're looking for a loyal, adventurous companion who is both playful and gentle, Erik is the perfect match.

A volunteer recently took Gorgeous on a Doggy Day Out and shared their experience: "Gorgeous is an affectionate and calm dog! She waited patiently for me to take her out of her cage. She adores people; everyone is a friend to Gorgeous! When she was outside next to another dog in the large kennels, she simply sniffed around and then carried on with her own activities. It seems she gets along well with other dogs! She's definitely a favorite among shelter staff—everyone knows her name ❤️ She just wants to greet everyone with a smile."

Hot weather is here to stay! Here are some essential tips to ensure the safety of your furry companions during warmer weather:
☀️AVOID leaving your pet in a parked vehicle or traveling in one without proper ventilation. Vehicle temperatures soar rapidly under the sun, regardless of the vehicle's color, posing serious risks to pets. If you spot an animal in distress inside a vehicle, report it to IMPD's non-emergency line at (317) 327-3811.
☀️AVOID engaging in walks, playtime, or runs during the hottest part of the day.
☀️REMEMBER to provide ample water for your pets, whether in bowls or pools, for hydration and cooling.
☀️ENGAGE in exercise and play during cooler hours, such as early morning or late evening.
☀️ENHANCE cooling by adding ice cubes to water bowls and pools. Regularly check and refill water sources as needed.
☀️KEEP pets indoors where it's cooler, especially when temperatures soar above 90 degrees or during weather advisories, as mandated by ordinance (531-401).
☀️Before walking your pet, test the surface temperature by placing your hand on it. If you can't keep your hand there for 7 seconds, it's too hot for your pet's paws. Opt for cooler surfaces or schedule walks during cooler times of the day.

IACS has a variety of open positions! Visit https://www.indy.gov./activity/join-the-iacs-team to see which role works best for you!
Want to foster a shelter animal, but not sure if you have the time?
IACS’s Foster Program offers the flexibility to foster for as long or as short as you’d like! You can help our animals by giving them a safe and quiet place to rest for a few days, weeks, or until they’re adopted.
Studies show that even short-term fostering can help relieve an animal’s stress levels. By giving an animal a break from the shelter, you can help to free up kennel space, provide valuable information about an animal’s behavior outside the shelter to help get them adopted, and most importantly – help save a life!

With the hot weather here it is important to know the sign of heatstroke in animals. A good rule of thumb is when in doubt, submit a report.
🐾 Heavy Panting
🐾 Increased salivation and drooling
🐾 Collapsing, stumbling, and / or falling down
🐾 Vomiting
🐾 Bright Red Gums
If your personal pet is showing these symptoms the best thing to do is get them to a vet's office as soon as possible. Do not put them in ice water, as this can cause more issues. The best thing to do is to offer them cool water frequently to slowly lower their temperature.
If you see a pet in distress a report can be submitted online at, https://request.indy.gov/citizen/home, or call the MAC from 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday at 317-327-4622. In addition to submitting a report, if able to safely contain the pet please do so as it will greatly assist our officers in finding the animal when they arrive.
