The "puppy blues" is a common experience for new dog owners, characterized by feelings of anxiety and overwhelm after bringing a new puppy or dog home.
In addition to exercise, love, and patience, there is one sure-fire antidote to the puppy blues: effective training.

Although we work with dogs every single day, we are constantly learning amazing new things about them! (Fun Fact #6 is our favorite and partly explains why dogs LOVE being trained as service animals!)
1. Petting a dog lowers human blood pressure—and the dog's too!
2. Dogs curl up in a ball when they sleep to protect their vital organs, a survival instinct from their wild ancestors.
3. Yawning is contagious for dogs too. Hearing a human yawn, especially from someone they know, makes dogs four times more likely to yawn.
4. Dogs can sense heat and thermal radiation with their noses, allowing blind or deaf dogs to hunt effectively.
5. When dogs kick backward after bathroom breaks, they're marking their territory with scent glands in their feet, not trying to cover up their p**p.
6. Recent research reveals that dogs are among the few animals who exhibit voluntary, unselfish kindness to others without expecting a reward.
7. A dog's nose has its own unique pattern—just like human fingerprints!

Imagine you and your dog are headed to the base of a beautiful mountain—one you've anticipated hiking together for years. You park along a dirt road and the air is filled with the scent of pine; the sound of wildlife is all around you. Did you know that when you tell your dog to “place”, they are being asked to stay in that position for as long as you ask them to—even if you’re not paying attention to them?
Your dog’s threshold to maintain the command for longer can be strengthened as you train. A puppy may only be able to go a few seconds, but a 2-year-old dog can be taught to “place” for much longer AND do it with plenty of distractions! 🐾

Why do we teach "place" as a basic command?

2 - Behavioral Control: The "place" command provides a clear and consistent way to manage your dog's behavior. It helps establish boundaries and reinforces your role as the leader. This can be particularly useful in situations where you want your dog to stay calm, safe, or attentive.
3 - Manners: Teaching your dog to go to a designated place is a life saver when you have guests or visitors—especially those who may be uncomfortable around dogs. It allows you to have better control over your dog's interactions and helps create a positive environment for everyone involved.
4 - Reducing Anxiety: For some dogs, having a designated place can create a sense of security and reduce anxiety. This is especially true in new environments or when faced with unfamiliar stimuli. The command can serve as a cue for your dog to find a safe spot and stay calm.
5 - Tricks: As shown in some of the photos, it's a pretty cool party trick to show your dog's talent to "place" on a fire hydrant, playground toys, or whatever climbable object is around!
