A note from Dr. Courter:

"Thank you to all clients, staff and support peers in the industry. These past 5+ years have been incredible and have helped shape me into the person and doctor I am today. I'm so incredibly grateful for the experiences and opportunities to work with you all, even in the most challenging of times (COVID), broken hearted cases, and joys. I am so fortunate to be able to have a career doing what I love-- advocating for the animal above all else. Thank you for all of your support and gratitude as one chapter ends, but a new one begins. See you on the trails. ❀️ -Dr. Margaret Courter

Strongyles are some of the most common intestinal parasites in horses. A F***l Egg Count (FEC) indicates whether your horse is a low, moderate, or high-shedder and helps your veterinarian determine an effective deworming protocol. We recommend having an FEC performed yearly and rotating deworming products to keep your horse's parasitic load minimal and prevent the parasites from developing any drug resistance. In addition to deworming, you can help keep parasite numbers down by making sure stalls and pastures are clean, and manure is picked and removed regularly.

Spring is here! Its a wonderful time of the year, but it may be the beginning of some serious problems for horses vulnerable to grass induced laminitis.
Laminitis or founder, as it is commonly called, is inflammation of the laminae of the horse’s foot. Laminitis can be triggered by different causes, one of which is lush grass.
In cases of grass founder, the sugar fructans produced by rapidly growing grass stimulates an overgrowth of bacteria in the horse’s large intestine. The bacteria produce and release toxins (endotoxins) that are carried by the bloodstream to the foot where they cause damage to the laminae and small blood vessels.
The best way to deal with laminitis is preventing and managing the causes under your control. Consult your equine practitioner for further information and to formulate a plan tailored to your horse's individual situation. If you suspect laminitis, consider it a medical emergency and notify your veterinarian immediately!

03/28/2022

You'll often hear us talk about updating your horse's Coggins, but what exactly is it? The Coggins test is a blood test run annually to test for Equine Infectious Anemia, a blood-borne virus that can be fatal. EIA is spread through biting insects, and signs can vary from a slight fever to edema (swelling), muscle weakness, disorientation, and severe anemia. Current proof of Coggins testing is required to move your horse interstate, to enter shows or competitions, and for change of ownership or sale. **Results can take 3-5 business days to return from the lab, so if you plan on taking your horse on a trip out of state, plan accordingly and give us a call!

We all love when the weather is nice enough to start showing, trail riding and camping with our equine friends, but that means more close contact between horses from all over!

Don't forget to get your horses vaccinated against highly contagious diseases such as Influenza, Rhinopneumonitis, and Strangles.

Give us a call to schedule your Spring Wellness appointments before you start traveling with your horse this year! πŸ’‰

Warmer weather is coming and it's bringing some pesky insects with it! 🦟

Mosquitoes aren't just annoying for humans but they can cause issues for our horses too. Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis (EEE), Western Equine Encephalomyelitis (WEE), and West Nile are just a few of the viruses that mosquitoes can spread to our equine friends. Mosquitoes aren't the only troublesome insects though! Mayflies and other winged aquatic insects can transmit a disease called Potomac Horse Fever that is endemic to our area.

Our CORE vaccine includes protection from Eastern & Western Equine Encephalomyelitis, Rabies, Tetanus, and West Nile Virus. Don't worry, we have a vaccine for Potomac Horse Fever too!

We generally recommend that a veterinarian administers any vaccines in case of a reaction and for our vaccine guarantee. For more information, give our office a call. πŸ“ž

Ever wonder what the world looks like through your horses' eye?? It is true, horses do see color, however it looks different than what we see. Unlike humans that have 3 cone types (that allow us to see red, green, and blue), horses only have 2 cone types (that allow them to see blue and shades of gray/ washed out colors). Horses also have a yellow tint to their lens which likely filters out blue wavelengths this blocks out glare and increases contrast of certain objects against select backgrounds, acting almost like blue-blocking sunglasses do for humans! Check out the human vs horse color wheel!

With spring right around the corner, it's time to start thinking about spring wellness and vaccines. Before the mosquitoes come back out and show travel commences, it's important to ensure our horses are protected from the various diseases they are most at risk to contract. Badger Equine offers several wellness package options per your horse's risk level, based on environmental risks and contact with other horses. Give us a call to set up your spring wellness visit!

What's going on here? What's with the rope?

This is called the Madigan Foal Squeeze technique. It applies thoracic pressure and squeezes around a foal's chest to lay them down without drugs and even causes slow-sleep waves. This is most commonly used on "dummy foals" as the pressure created mimics that of the birth canal. The release of pressure is thought to reset and switch "ON" important signals that allow the foal to recognize the mare, stand and nurse. It's pretty amazing!

Foaling Season is here!
Have you heard of the Foaling 1-2-3 Rule?

Hour 1: Foal should be standing & walking by hour 1.
Hour 2: Foal should be latched & nursing by hour 2.
Hour 3: Mare should pass the placenta by hour 3.

Remember these rules during foaling and give us a call if you have any problems or concerns!

Spring is slowly approaching and with that so is FOALING SEASON! Important prep prior to foaling includes:
❀Pre-foaling vaccines- we recommend getting your pregnant mare her spring vaccines at 10 months of gestation so that she can pass on adequate immunity to her new foal
❀Pre-foaling deworming- Mares should get dewormed against Bots, Tapeworms and small strongyle larvae prior to foaling
❀Environment- start prepping a large foaling stall area that has clean bedding and straw for when the time comes
❀Foaling Kit- Start to prepare your foaling kit to have everything on hand and ready to go
