Run by the keepers of Claws 'N' Paws Wild Animal Park. Updates on the animals & a little bit of the inside scoop on some of the keepers favorite animals.

Claws 'N' Paws is a private zoo in the heart of Lake Ariel. It's often called "the zoo in the woods" because of it's woodland setting. We are open May until mid-late October. Throughout the day there are a number of keeper-lead activities, many of which are designed to give the public a closer interaction with our animals. Lory parrot feedings and turtle town are some of our favorites

s run entirely by our keepers. All the photos, updates and stories are from the keepers who work with these animals every day. We love our animals very much and know that many of you care about them too and we cant wait to share their lives with you. Keep in touch over the winter too. Although you may not be able to come and visit them yourself, we promise to keep you updated and post lots of pictures of all your favorites. If you have any questions we'd be more than happy to answer them and would love to see all the great pictures you've taken too. If you have a favorite animal that you'd like to see more of, just let us know and we will do our best.

Today we celebrate Sue for International Vulture Awareness Day!

Vultures have an unnecessarily bad reputation in the animal kingdom but the truth is, these birds are imperative to the ecosystem. Due to the fact that they are nature's "clean-up crew", they are crucial in helping to mitigate the spread of diseases. Out of the 23 species of vultures around the world, 16 of them are threatened, endangered, or close to extinction.

It's that time of year again for George!
George here is shedding his velvet on his antlers. While it looks painful, the process is totally normal and just a little bit itchy for the deer.

Antlers differ than horns in the fact that they regrow and then shed their antlers every year. While they are growing, the antlers are covered in a layer of fuzzy tissue called velvet. The velvet contains a decent amount of blood supply that helps develop the antlers as they grow. Once the antlers are completely done growing, the animal starts to shed their velvet and then underneath the antlers harden and darken into their final form.

Today is also International Primate Day. Primates play a vital role in their surroundings ecosystem, but unfortunately, many primate species are either in decline or are already endangered. They face dangers such as poaching, the illegal pet trade, and habitat destruction.

We often get questions about our New Guinea Singing Dog, Link. He is still hanging around as an old man at 14 years old. He is often kept off display due to the stress that large crowds, thunderstorms, and the heat sometimes cause him. Link struggles with a heart condition and has to be kept as calm as possible, so during the day, he is kept in a quiet, cool building to relax. He goes on daily walks with his keepers and even comes out at night time when the customers have gone and it cools down.

We would like to introduce Lil Dipper to the zoo crew. Lil Dip was born to mom, Raggedy Ann, and dad, George, on August 12th. She has already won over her keepers with her adorable looks and her houdini skills ❤️

It's been Hot Hot Hot here at the zoo for keepers and animals alike. The zoo crew has been doing everything they can do to help keep their animals cool and hydrated. They have frozen their treats in ice blocks, given them buckets of ice to root around in, they are spraying them down with cool water, and refilling their waters constantly. At this point, we believe the animals are handling this heat better than their keepers! Guess you can say Summer is officially here! 🌞

With Christmas fast approaching, Santa is finalizing his Naughty and Nice list. Don't worry, it has been checked twice! Needless to say, she wasn't too fond of this development!

Edgar wants to remind everyone that today is officially our last day open for the season!

What is that sound?! That is our alligator, Mr. Big, bellowing! What does mean? Alligators will bellow to communicate to another alligator how big they are. This happens especially during breeding season and both male and female alligators will make this sound. Enjoy the video!
