Dog licks are often thought of as doggy kisses. But, it’s actually something to take a step back and notice. And could sometimes be considered a, “Kiss to Dismiss” (more on that below). These licks do trigger some questions that may seem a bit silly to ask in response. Something like, “Describe the licks for me. Fast, slow, and then does the dog move away?”
“Is it a full tongue or a little bit?”
“Full tongue lick or quick flick?”
“Is the child sitting and the dog approaches or vice versa, what level of mobility does the child have, is food present or remnant?

There’s many questions! But, these questions help us gather valuable information to help us understand what the dog may be communicating. At Family Paws Parent Education, we want to help parents consider and recognize that dog licks may not always be what we think they are, “affectionate kisses”, or indications of “love,” but could have other meanings. We refer to this as “Kiss to Dismiss”. If you are curious of these doggy “kisses” and if they are a “Kiss to Dismiss”, ask yourself,
🐶 Is your dog in need of space? (what just happened? Did your baby crawl closer to your dog?)
🐶 Is your dog in need of space and there is a reason they may choose not to move? (example: comfy spot, resource, pain)
🐶 Does this licking deter closeness or lead to an increase in space?

Thank you, Steve Bishop of Bishops Gate Dog Training for this graphic! Steve is also a Family Paws Parent Educator.
We do not recommend baby and dogs interact as shown in these illustrations. Never allow your baby to crawl up to or freely explore your dog in this way.

September is National Service Dog Month!

What Does a Service Dog Do? Service dogs are specially trained to perform tasks that assist people with physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or other disabilities. They might guide those with visual impairments, alert individuals with hearing loss, detect seizures, provide stability for those with mobility issues, or even offer comfort during anxiety or PTSD episodes.

These amazing dogs are more than just pets—they’re true lifesavers and companions, working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of their handlers.

Let’s take a moment to honor these devoted dogs and the life-changing work they do! ❤️

About Us

“Bons Chiens” (pronounced “bon she-eh”) is French for “Good Dogs”. Founded in 2011 by Lake Charles native Britney (Blanchette) Pitre, the name was chosen because there truly are no bad dogs--every dog is a Good Dog--a Bon Chien!

BONS CHIENS Dog Training, LLC. specializes in pet dog education (obedience) training and behavior modification. We offer a wide variety of in-home, private dog training services and private training within our facility that are tailored to you and your dog's specific needs. We also offer group training lessons in our facility. Group lessons are currently only offered in SWLA (Britney Pitre, and Savannah Hunt). However, private and semi-private dog training lessons are available in Southeast Texas (Susan Young), and Central Louisiana (Alexandria/Pineville and surrounding areas--Dara Rogers).

All of our FOUR trainers are ALL CPDT-KA®, Fear Free™ Certified Professionals, are certified in Canine First Aid, and CPR. Britney Pitre is one of only three CBCC-KA® in the state of Louisiana. Being that we are all certified by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers we are all held to higher standards than other dog trainers, and behavior consultants. “The Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT), established in 2001, is the leading independent certifying organization for the dog training profession. The CCPDT is the leader in the development of rigorous exams to demonstrate mastery of humane, science-based dog training practices. Thousands of dog training professionals worldwide maintain the CCPDT’s certifications as a mark of high professional distinction.” To learn more about the CCPDT please visit http://www.ccpdt.org/
