Today's highlight reel.

The BARK neighborhood is excited to welcome the newest residents-- at least 2, possibly 3, eaglets!! A better camera system is coming, but you can see the gray blobs right in front of the adult.

This is Braxton. He's 11, almost 12, and mostly blind. He's here with his Golden brother, Marley, who likes to play. The socialization experiences here aren't just for the young and physically healthy. He's not running or playing, but Braxton's smelling, seeing, feeling, and experiencing new things every day. He's meeting new dogs every day with no issues. He's still being a dog, in a pack that accepts him. Love your old dogs, and give them every opportunity you can. They want nothing but life as they've always known it, and your love and attention. Braxton's just a little more determined to show his affection than most.

I get asked what it's like walking with dozens of dogs. Words really don't do it justice. It's like this.....

Cěsky (chesky) got in a disagreement with his brother a few days before they arrived for their overnights, and had multiple lacerations on his face and neck area. Taking multiple meds, and not wanting to be a part of the pack while he was here, he received lots of special attention.

So sad to hear of the passing of Ginger, a relatively new daycare dog. Still, she and I had a close bond. An old dog, she was here yesterday running and playing with her friends. Ran to get in the car with her dad at the end of the day, and then passed in her sleep. My sympathies to her humans and her sisters, Nora and Skye. Extra hugs for them tomorrow at daycare.
Love your old dogs, and give them the same experiences, or even more, as you would your younger dogs. It keeps them healthy and promotes a longer life. They still have the same desire to play and experience things as they always have. They don't know they're old, just that their body doesn't work as well as it used to. Have a safe trip over the bridge, Ginger. I'll miss you.

As part of the socialization test, I explain to the owners that every day between 11 and 1 is naptime. Almost without fail, they respond with some form of hidden disbelief. Or open disbelief. I get it, it's hard to imagine without seeing it, so here it is. Naptime at BARK. I get asked what I do to make the dogs do ( insert action here ). The beauty of the system here is that I actually don't do anything. Everything's natural for the dogs. Plus I have some of the best dogs/ owners around. There's lots of videos of the dogs playing, and that's key to naptime. As the old saying goes "a tired dog is a good dog. " As you can see, the stress level here is through the roof!!😉

Because seeing this never gets old. 15 dogs in 12 seconds. Sara, Saylor, River and Roxy are moving south, and this is their last time getting in the daycare bus. 🥲 Ask anyone in this business, and it always feels like you're losing your own dogs.

As I sat with the dogs this morning, I realized my only worries in the course of doing my "job" are if the dogs arrive on time, if they're all going to behave each day, or if I screwed up the schedule. Never once have I had to worry about making it home at night. As all of Minnesota, and three towns in particular, recently found out, some people don't make it home at the end of their "shift". Growing up in a law enforcement family, I remember nights my mom would stay up out of worry until my dad made it home from the sheriff's department. It's not just the officers that feel the pressure, it's every single member of their family. Now, firefighters and EMTs face the same dangers. I'm grateful to have one of Lake City's EMTs as a volunteer here, and she brings the same care and compassion to the dogs as she does to her patients. To show our support for these individuals, effective March 1st, Katie and I are giving a 50% discount on daycare and boarding to all active LEOs, firefighters, and EMTs. If you see someone from one of these professions, stop and thank them for doing something most of us wouldn't. They deserve it!
