Meet Your CAWDA Board - Lisa Gabaldon Secretary
Horses have always been a part of my life. My grandfather was a rancher who passed his love of horses to my mother, who then passed it on to me. I started showing my sister’s horse, “Brat,” in halter when I was five. I inherited an Appaloosa gelding named “Razzle,” whom I showed in Western and with whom I explored the mountains of Big Bear. We had a successful but short-lived show career, winning at the local level and starting to attend rated Appaloosa shows when Razzle died from colic. After that, I had a few horses, but most of my time was dedicated to my career and kids.
I moved to Henderson, Nevada, in 2000, and by 2005, I was back into horses. I started showing an Appaloosa gelding initially purchased for my daughter. Although he did well, he was frequently off and was later diagnosed with navicular disease. I wanted to show again but didn’t want to purchase another horse.
At that time, my husband and I cared for a friend’s horse, and I grew fond of him. When our friend passed away, his family took the horseback. Heartbroken, we sent him back, but they asked if we were interested when they couldn’t sell him due to his reputation. I jumped at the chance. Roani became ours and was destined to become my husband’s new team roping horse. A month later, he was sent to a trainer for roping, but by the end of the month, he was sent back home with a recommendation to sell him before he hurt someone. After many failed attempts to sell, ride, or do anything with the horse, my husband gave up. In a weak moment, he said, “You can have him!”
Roani and I had a great relationship on the ground, as I had cared for him for a year, but I wanted to show him. He had many bad habits and had previously been sedated to be tacked up, but I was determined. I worked with several trainers before meeting Jessie Bonneau. Jessie had faith in the horse and the knowledge to fix him. Roani would not pick up the right lead for the first nine years of his life. Under Jessie’s supervision, I started showing at our local shows. We had some success in English pleasure, but he was always too strong for Western pleasure.
I had never heard of Western dressage until Jessie suggested I attend an educational event put on by Vivian Mevorah. Vivian held an educational night before the clinic, and I loved everything taught. The next day, Roani and I arrived for a riding demo. After my ride, Vivian said, “I think your horse might do well in Western dressage.” That comment gave me so much hope. I now had a discipline that I could do with the horse I loved.
Since then, Roani and I have been going strong with Western dressage. The horse who couldn’t lope on the correct lead or walk in the arena is now doing Level 2 with me and Level 5 with Jessie Bonneau. Roani and I have won several CAWDA awards, and we will attend the WDAA World Show for the fifth time in September. I am so grateful for trainers like Jessie Bonneau, who have the knowledge and passion to turn troubled horses and riders into champions.
It is a privilege to serve as the Secretary for California Western Dressage since January 2021. I work with amazing people who put their all into the club. These talented individuals brought a fabulous venue, The Horse Human Connection, to Las Vegas in March and will be hosting another in November 2025. The Horse Human Connection II will be in California and already has a spectacular lineup!
