Mixing up some strawberry jalapeño “Backyard Jam” and finally some lunch with our heirloom tomatoes & fresh garden basil

Elm roots….
When I did the landscaping on my property in 2005 I really thought that lace barkElm trees were beautiful.
Let me tell you! They are a gardeners nightmare. They are extremely invasive.
This elm tree was 30’ from this root ball and it continued the length of the entire bed stripping the soil of nutrients and moisture.
So just a friendly warning, elm trees and gardening do not go hand in hand.

Fertilizer injectors
A few people have asked how I feed my gardens with the ground cover/ Mylar mulch that I use to cover the beds.
This is my set up for the gardens.
First I only use this for supplemental feeding as I try to amend my beds with blood meal bone meal, cotton seed meal, kelp and some worm castings before we cover the beds and start planting. ( I put a few grains of mycos in each hole while planting.)
The beds don’t really need feeding until they really start growing and begin to fruit.
This is when I use my injector.
MSU, makes some great water soluble blends that will dork great. I use the RO vineyard blend with both higher N and K.
I’ll throw up some pictures and hope that it helps you all, build a system of your own.

Today we dug out the asparagus bed. The lace bar elm trees ( with their spider roots) had overtaken the bed. So….
John, removed all the crowns, filled 3, 35 gallon trash cans with roots then All the soil came out. We put down a thick liner, added 2 rows of fresh soil, placed all the crowns, amended soil with blood mean, bone meal, cottonseed meal, kelp and warm castings.
Filled everything back in. I’m going to cover this bed with medium mulch to try and preserve the moisture this year.
