This should be an incredible litter.
I have trained Jet since she was a puppy. She is a special dog that is not only talented but a pleasure to train and be around. And Buster is phenomenal. I like this breeding so much I’m going to take a pup.

What we focus on expands. What we focus on with strong emotion expands quickly.
This totally applies to dog training.

The following is a great definition of success as it relates to dog training and life in general.

"Success is the PROGRESSIVE realization of a WORTHY ideal."

Notice success according to this definition is not merely a destination, but more about the pursuit and the journey.

Does every dog need to be force fetched?

I used to think so as that's what almost all trainers proposed.
But my experience has proven that though force fetch is often necessary, it's NOT always necessary.
There are several factors that help me make this determination.
1) The dogs tendencies for natural delivery.
2) The dogs natural tendencies to holding and handling birds and bumpers properly ( as in no chewing, chomping, etc. )
3) The dogs temperament.

The majority of the dogs I train still need to be force fetched but I know longer assume every dog will need to be. I have put several Master Hunter titles on dogs without force fetching them, as well as many hunting dogs.

So yes perhaps force fetching is usually necessary but that is not the same as always.

Keep this in mind; just because something has always been done doesn't mean it always has to be done. And this applies to all of training. Don't be afraid to think outside the box and when necessary even getting rid of the box.

UPCOMING TRAINING DAYS/EVENTS

We are planning a training day at the Lodi property Sunday December 18th for dogs just starting out ( Junior level and below ).
We are limiting it to 10 dogs. Anyone interested can message me for more details.
Also in early January we will be having a training day for advanced dogs ( senior dogs and above ). This will also be limited to 10 dogs. This event will be a fun competition with judges and awards given out. For the winner the training day will be free as well as receiving a first place trophy. Or you can just show up to run the tests and use the grounds.
You can message me to sign up or get more details.

I thought the following was excellent and relates to not only dog training but any form of competition or testing.
It is from Dave Rorem's The Art and Science of Handling Retrievers.

"Attitude is everything in retrievers and people, and the most important ingredient to success.

You must have self-confidence. It is vital for success.

You have to believe you can and will win every trial and every national.

Fundamentals are the foundation to your success. Practice them often.

You must learn to accept and make changes. Our sport demands it.

You must never stop dreaming big. Your success hinges on it.

Always, do what is right, with dogs and people.

Always, be fair to dogs and people.

Always do the best you can- do not accept mediocrity.

Nothing can lull you to sleep and cause complacency, like success can and does.

Don't limit yourself to where our sport is now. Think beyond that, into the future.

Commit yourself to excellence."

This definitely applies to dog training.
"Good leadership is the ability to discern the uniqueness of an individual and teach them accordingly. This may mean we will have to adapt our style depending on the individuals temperament and wiring."

12/16/2015

A question for all you dog owners. What is the greatest lesson your dog has taught you?

11/30/2015

The following may apply to dogs and dog training as well.
" If you treat an individual (or dog) as they are, they will stay as they are. But if you treat them as if they were what they ought to be and could be, they will become what they ought to be and could be."- Goethe

The book I have written has been published and is now available on amazon. The title is The Quest: The Path To Dog Training Success. It is a fictional story based on what I feel are some important training concepts. It is a short read at 89 pages. For those that decide to read it I would love to get your feedback.

Here is a definition of Leadership that I thought related well to dog training. "Authority should be seen as a part of Leadership, not as a way around it"- Michael McKinney
