Ride On Therapeutic Horsemanship

Ride On Therapeutic Horsemanship Ride On provides equine related activities for those with physical and mental disabilities. Our oldest rider is over 90.
(12)

Ride On teaches adaptive horseback riding to children and adults with physical and cognitive disabilities and we provide physical, occupational and speech therapy specializing in using the movement of the horse to improve specific medical conditions. Founded in 1994, Ride On has given over 100,000 safe, effective and individualized lessons and therapy treatments and currently serves 200 individua

ls each week. We operate in two locations: serving the Conejo Valley, our 13-acre Newbury Park site is operated in partnership with the Conejo Recreation and Park District; in the San Fernando Valley, Chatsworth is home to our 3-acre ranch which we own. Adaptive Riding emphasizes recreation, riding skills and fun on horseback. We teach individuals with a wide range of disabilities beginning around age six. We also offer riding lessons for siblings and the general public as space is available. Our therapy program specializes in hippotherapy. It always involves a licensed physical, occupational or speech therapist and it emphasizes the beneficial effect of a horse’s movement on our patients. There is a body of peer-reviewed scientific research examining the benefits of equine movement on patients as young as two years of age. Ride On recently partnered with Central Michigan University on one such study involving children with cerebral palsy. Ride On is the only nationally accredited program offering hippotherapy in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. Ride On’s experienced and talented staff includes nine certified riding instructors and nine licensed therapists. We are proud to have 4 faculty on staff who train and certify new and experienced instructors and therapists for national associations. Our team is assisted by over a hundred volunteers each week using a wonderful team of thirty horses carefully trained and well-suited to the unique demands of our work. Ride On is a public trust and we are committed to running a transparent and accountable nonprofit. Our financial statements are posted on our website at www.rideon.org

We are very proud to announce that Chloe from our Ride On Thousand Oaks CALNET team was chosen to receive the Chris Ludwig Award for Excellence during the CALNET show. This award is given to an athlete each year who demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship and effort during the show. The judges were especially impressed with her support and encouragement for her fellow competitors. After placing 3rd in her class Chloe could not be more excited for those that placed above her, and her genuine kindness and enthusiasm shone very brightly! Congrats Chloe, we are very proud of you

CALNET Day 2! What an amazing weekend! After being displaced with incredibly short notice from the LAEC we managed to rally the troops and relocate the entire show to Rancho Potrero Community Equestrian Center! So many wonderful people come together to make this show so special! Special thanks to our volunteer judges Connie Hammond Weinsoff, Amy Sheets, Donna Spencer, Gloria Hamblin and Andre Gaston; our volunteer office staff Rob Wallsgrove, Michele Kestler and Lucy Guerre; the Rangers for safety support and pancakes, the Sieker family for lunch and much more, Matt Gibb for photography, Gayle Paperno for facility management, the RPCEC facility staff, Show Managers Bryan McQueeney and Sara Jones, the many volunteers behind the scenes that scribed, cooked, supported and did all the things and last but not least and most importantly the amazing competitors and the centers that went to an enormous amount of effort to make this is a possibility for their students! We cannot wait to do this again next year!!!

HUGE congratulations to Mikaela for successfully completing the PATH Intl. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor certification! To successfully become a CTRI, candidates need to demonstrate their knowledge of disabilities, equines, teaching and human-animal interactions and its quite a process! Mikaela teaches our adaptive riding students and looks after our lovely herd of horses at our Pasadena location. She is an amazing instructor and we are very fortunate to have her on our team!

We had a great couple of mornings this week helping out with the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency Trails Education Days. The goal of this event is to instill youngsters with an appreciation and sense of stewardship of natural open space and over the course of 4 days nearly 1000 4th grade students participate! We were “actors” in a very fun skit involving a hiker with a dog, a mountain biker and an equestrian in which we acted out a scenario of the wrong way to behave in open space! It was super fun, super educational and very worthwhile!! We are looking forward to meeting these newly educated kids out on the trail!!

We are really looking forward to the "CALNET" Horse Show which will be held May 17 - 19 at the prestigious Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank. For those that don’t know, the CALNET Show is in its 35th year and is a fantastic, professional event dedicated to equestrians with special needs. Classes will include the CALNET favorites including Futures, Equitation, Showmanship, Obstacle, Pole Bending, Open Dressage and the ever-popular Costume Class!

We will also be offering clinics on Friday - Megan McQueeney will be offering a "Ride Your Test" clinic and Sara Jones and Brie Doherty will be offering a "Teach Your CTRI Lesson" clinic. We have also added a Showmanship Clinic which will be taught by Cheryl Rohnke. Cheryl is a CHA Master Instructor and Certifier, AQHA Pro Horseman and has over 40 years experience working in the show field. The clinic is not only aimed at those competing in the Showmanship Class it is also appropriate for coaches/staff/volunteers that would like to learn more about horse handling/communication/obedience and teaching good skills for horse handling during AR lessons and Therapy Services treatment sessions. Sign ups for the clinics are available in the Registration Pack or email [email protected].

We will also be hosting the open Dressage Schooling on Sunday which is open to all - entry from can be found at www.CalnetShow.org

Classes are always free for riders with disabilities and once again this year we will not be charging for horse stalls or the Friday night dinner. Thanks to the San Fernando Rangers we will also be serving a delicious free pancake breakfast on Sunday morning. The Registration Pack is available on our website www.CalnetShow.org.

Every year the world comes together to observe World Autism Awareness Day. It is a day to raise awareness, promote acceptance and understand the challenges faced by those living with autism. 1 in 54 children in the US is diagnosed with autism and it is the largest population served at Ride On. Our team of horses, volunteers, therapists and instructors work passionately to help improve the lives of individuals on the autism spectrum and their families every day!

Yamaha Guitars Marketing team pushed themselves out of their comfort zone with a motivational team building experience at our Rancho Potrero Community Equestrian Center facility! Much fun and collaboration was had by all! (including the horses….!).

A quote from one of the team.. “This is a great way to experience something that pushes you to interact differently with a group of your friends or team-members who, until something like this, you thought you already knew.”

If you are interested in having your team collaborate in a completely unique and fun environment reach out to [email protected]!
