A lot of my joy in my work is in those solitary moments enjoying different states of progress. I feel like it’s a little gift earned after all those stressful periods of “when is it finished?!” Often I want to stop just there. I love the beauty of this kitty the way she is. I’d have considered calling her near finished, if the painting was only for me. Instead, I enjoy her for a while and then proceed.

I’m doing that thing that I suspect a lot of us do: I’m thinking WAY too much about the content of what I might post here, moreso since I’ve proclaimed I’m going to share more!

This, of course ends up with me not posting anything. It’s counterproductive and frankly ridiculous because even if I don’t have anything earth-shatteringly brilliant to say, I have a multitude of images I have yet to share!

What will help? You telling me what you like to see —or when you see what you like! This kitty illustrates these sentiments perfectly I think. What say you? 🐈‍⬛

Reeling and Recovering

This is a scene frozen in time for a lot longer than anticipated; Brushes stagnant, murky water topped with a settling of dust. Remnants from a forgotten session on I don’t know quite what day.

My last post was written with the feeling of high optimism, and not only for brimming ideas of new projects and creative development. I was also hopeful for what I thought was the impending freedom from symptoms of Covid that hit me on Christmas Eve with a wallop and ambushed any and all holiday festivities until well after the New Year.

Then my back went out. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I am indeed on the mend in both ways. I’m having to be pretty mindful of how I feel and what to do (or not do) about it, but I have renewed enthusiasm for what I will learn and accomplish this year.

Onwards and upwards! 🎨

Happy New Year! I'm incredibly grateful for my artistic growth in 2023, particularly in honing my artistic skills and instinct, but especially in expressing my artistic identity. This is WHO I AM, not only what I do. FINALLY!

I thought the challenge was a good jumping off point for 2024! 🎉

Last night I had the stark realization that although I adore (and I mean ADORE) painting animal portraits, there was an obvious absence throughout 2023: my other independent work!

Now when I tell you my mind is swimming with ideas and projects, I want you to look at the fish in the lower left panel and imagine a whole bustling school of them. Really. But they’re happy fish! No hungry sharks nearby. 🐟🐠🐟

My official intentions for the New Year (*Gasp*):

🌟 share more of me, my process and my life to my followers on social media. (But don’t get any crazy ideas, I’m always going to be a touch of the recluse!)

🌟Put myself out there more. I have a lot to share!

🌟 Dedicate more time to developing, organizing and working on the many ideas and projects swimming in my head— while still enjoying my labor of love in pet portraiture. Who knows what creative treasures I’ll find?

🌟Dive more deeply into learning by surrounding myself with books, courses, podcasts, documentaries, anything that makes me feel creatively motivated and inspired. These things things need to occupy a larger space in my down time.

Meet Olive!

This 24" x 30" acrylic pet portrait on canvas was a Christmas gift for a daughter whose love for her kitty Olive shines as bright as Olive's playful gaze. I’m so pleased with how it turned out!

I chose to play with the forest greens, earthy aquas, and pops of mustard from a cherished New Yorker magazine poster to create a backdrop that complements Olive's sweet air and soft white fur. But the true magic lies in those golden green eyes - a touch of gold paint adds a twinkle of life, the cherry on top of this artistic Christmas pudding!

… or maybe the angel on the tree, just like in the cheerful photo I just received!
