Bodhi Fights FIP

Bodhi Fights FIP This page documents Bodhi's journey as he fights FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis.) This is a dise We are not vets or have any medical training.

This is only our journey in treating FIP in hopes we can help someone else save their kitty from this horrible disease. Please share this page especially with your kitty loving friends, friends who have had a kitty with FIP and your vet friends. I kept a daily journal and have posted all those entries. Some posts have more than 1 day if the day was uneventful. I am not a FIP expert but will happily answer any questions about how or why I did certain things, etc.

One year ago today I had my 1st dose of the medicine that would save my life. Last year I had no interest in this thing the 2 leggeds call Christmas. This year however, I think Christmas is AWESOME! We have a tree in our living room. I live to lay under it and chew on the branches. Mom has lots of new stuff set out and I like to walk over all it and scare her into thinking I'm going to knock stuff off. And I am a pro at this wrapping paper stuff. Mom says I'm not quite the helper I think I am. Hard to believe a year ago I was fighting for my life and now I'm living my best life.

Its my Gotcha Day! Hard to believe that my family saved me twice! Once when they got me from the rescue and the 2nd time from FIP. I have tried my best to thank them by eating all the flies I catch. I even caught a chipmunk once and tried to give it to mom but she made me leave it outside and she let it go when she saw it was still alive. I spent today watching squirrels from my window, looking for chipmunks by their hidey holes and partaking in fun with my dog friends.

I LOVE exploring! I'm pretty sure that the chipmunks live in the neighbors bushes but no one was home today. I'm still thriving. Take that FIP!

Bodhi is sad because he has hidden his 2 favorite pompom balls and now he can't play fetch. None of these 22 are good enough. I told him he is lucky to be alive and shouldn't be so picky with his toys. He disagrees.

Healthy, handsome and clean! We have successfully kicked FIP's butt and we aren't looking back. I do sprinkle Proboost over his dry food (since he won't eat wet🤦‍♀️) to help boost his immune response.

Finally got into the vet to see about his low hematocrit levels. AND they were normal! Came up 5 points on their own in the last 10 days. We are going to do monthly checks for a bit just to monitor but vet didn't think it was parasite related anemia but chronic illness anemia.

Mom got me a harness because I love adventures. Yesterday I did not like it. Today I stood and waited til she fastened it and my motor was going...I'm so excited to go outside I could hardly contain myself! I found the hidey hole for my chipmunk friends and tried to play as they zoomed past me. Guess they didn't want to play.

Bad Cat Mom! I just went back through all my texts and noticed I missed one from my FIP admin. She asked if I had ever had him checked for mycoplasma (a blood parasite.) I missed it or I would have had it checked, and a dose of doxycycline would have fixed it. I have him scheduled for a vet visit so hopefully that's all it is and he will be 100%!

05/25/2021

So the good news is Bodhi is considered cured of FIP. But now we have to figure out what is causing his low hematocrit.

05/24/2021

OB Day 87: Bloodwork was done this morning. The last bloodwork showed a decrease in hematocrit. It was still in the normal range. This bloodwork shows another dip in hematocrit which is now below normal. I have no idea what this means but I have sent the results to my FIP admin and will wait to see what the verdict is. Hopefully it is something easy like a b12 shot since he shows no symptoms of FIP and all his other numbers look good. I will keep you posted once I hear from her.

Day 85: So happy his family is home! Everything is back to normal for him. I checked his weight this morning and he gained while we were gone. No signs of the horrible disease. Bloodwork Monday ....fingers crossed!

05/20/2021

Yesterday was a rough day for Bodhi. He has had it with his family being gone so he tried to hop in the cage with the guinea pig and then pounced at the leg of one of the pet sitters. She opened the door to the porch and that made him happy. 2 more sleeps little man and your family will be home!

05/18/2021

OB Day 81 (May18): While my family is in Florida I have had great pet sitters looking after me. According to them I have a great appetite (maybe a little of that is stress eating since I'm bored and my family is away), I am super active with my sitters and very vocal about having lots of attention. No signs of illness setting back in. 3 more days until I am considered "cured" but we won't know for sure until the 24th when the final bloodwork is done.

05/11/2021

OB Day 74 (May 11): 10 days to go! He drank some water and threw up this morning. That has me a little concerned. He hasn’t coughed up a hairball or anything since Feb 28th. Maybe he was due but it looked like it was just water and not a hairball. I did do a lot of brushing him yesterday so he made have had more hair in his tummy than usual. Activity level and appetite is still the same. No URI symptoms. I will do a temperature check later this morning and continue to watch him like a hawk for the next couple days. I’m sure he is fine but being this close to leaving for 9 days and this close to being “cured” it makes me a little anxious.

OB Day 66 (May 3): Cat naps are great on rainy days! No sneezing, coughing, runny eyes or crusty nose. With only 18 days left in observation it is a little nerve racking that we could be this close but he could still relapse. Activity level is still high as is his dry kibble appetite. He goes in and out on which flavor Hartz he will eat. His sense of adventure is growing by the day and he feels the need to stick his head in any cabinet or cubby that he hasn’t been in yet. He loves to go outside with me and explore so next up is a cat harness. Since he isn’t food motivated like my other cats were I don’t want him getting under the deck with his chipmunk friends and then me not being able to get him out. He now has a very audible purr and has learned the shortest way to mom in the morning is to walk over Cat Dad. Since he weighs 10 pounds less than my old cat that used to do that Cat Dad sometimes doesn’t notice. As my vacation approaches it does make me super nervous how he is going to respond to mom (and his whole family) being gone for a week. Due to the whole Covid thing and him having to have daily shots he has never been completely alone overnight before. Next week he will have 8. I think after I get feedback from my pet sitter Saturday morning that all is good I will be able to relax a bit. On to OB Day 67!

Snuggles with my mom again!

04/26/2021

OB Day 59 (April 26): I left for the weekend and Bodhi did great again. He has his little nighttime routine where he runs and plays, gets up in the window for 30 minutes, vanishes for a while and then comes to bed. SO CLOSE to being done with this stage!

OB Day 48 (Apr 15): There has been no change in Bodhi’s health or attitude. I have him down as gaining more weight and he is super playful…especially first thing in the morning and as I am trying to go to sleep at night. No symptoms of a cold or runny eyes. I took advantage of the way he was laying yesterday and did a temperature check since we haven’t done one for a while. 101.2 so completely in the normal range. He loves just being a cat. Last night I filled his little hedgie with some fresh catnip and gave him some on a plate. That hedgie was pretty gross feeling when I stepped on it barefoot this morning.
I have booked his next bloodwork panel 2 weeks from today on April 29 at 10:30. That will be day 62 of observation. That means he will only be 22 days away from being able to graduate observation and be considered “Cured.” At this point it would be devastating to have to start again.

04/12/2021

Bodhi thinks this puppy needs to learn what personal space is. No puppies or cats were hurt in making this video. They play together pretty well. When Bodhi doesn't like something his tail flares to 4x its size.

04/09/2021

OB Day 42 (Apr 9): I got Chicken and Tuna Hartz yesterday….his favorite. Not anymore! Now all he wants is the whitefish and Tuna. Today marks halfway through observation. To see him running and bounding all over, eating, playing, purring…it was a long 84 days in the beginning but it was so worth it to see him living…even if he is super picky. He ends the observation period while we are on vacation. I just hope he doesn’t get too stressed out with no one around that he has a relapse that close to the end. Hopefully my nephew (the animal whisperer) will be just the ticket. Next round of bloodwork is April 27th.

04/07/2021

Look at that tail go! If you look close you can see where the kink is where he broke it. Almost 1/2 way through observation!

04/05/2021

OB Day 38 (Apr 5): We are back to Whitefish and Tuna. Bodhi says I will lick the gravy on it but I’m not eating it. He is loving Spring by sitting in all the windows and watching life move around him. He has been with us for almost 6 months and it’s hard to believe that for the majority of that time he was dying. Not anymore FIP! We took you on head first and will continue to fight as long as needed (which is hopefully only 36 more days!)

04/03/2021

OB Day 36 (Apr 3): Sorry we missed a few days. Some of my pets required my attention but nothing has changed for Bodhi. He is super spastic, loves to play and race around (he sounds like a rhino running through my house) and is eating enough for 2 cats. Watching the chipmunk consumes most of his days when the weather is warm enough to lay on the porch. 6 more days and we are halfway through this phase!

04/01/2021

OB Day 33 (Mar 31): Bodhi did a lot of napping yesterday. I guess his field trip to the vet wore him out a little. He made up for it last night at bedtime however and has been the crazy guy this morning. He may sense some turmoil in the home as we are putting our little old dog down this evening so it is pretty somber around here. Yesterday Bodhi decided he did not like Tuna and Whitefish again. Luckily for him Walmart had Tuna and Shrimp available so I picked all of those up. In Fact he ate 4 today!

03/30/2021

OB Day 32 (Mar 30): Blood work came back as stable. The ALB/GLOB has gone from .8 to 1.1. RDW (has to do with size) is a little high as is the MCHC (size of cells) but that one has actually come down. Lym has also gone up so his immune system is working. The spots on his side are not ring worm. Vet thought they were some type of skin lesion (maybe associated with the seepage where I did injections. He gave him a antibiotic shot to help with anything on the inside and I will continue with the Vetericyn and Neosporin on the outside. He admitted he was a non-believer but shortly after Bodhi’s diagnosis and me telling him I was starting this treatment an article came out in the vet journal. He also read the study from UC Davis and is very encouraged by seeing Bodhi’s results. His scale had him at 12.10 which is down from his 12.12 the last time. My scale still reads him half a pound heavier than that. As long as it stays consistent at the vet I am not too worried.

Bodhi first came to us in the fall. Him and I started watching the chipmunks prepare for winter. One day they just stopped coming so we knew they were hibernating. Now he has a new life anda new spot to watch them.

03/28/2021

OB Day 29 (Mar 27): Hopefully that was the last B12 injection. He has not sneezed anymore and shows no signs of any URI. I haven’t pulled goo from his left eye in a while now so I hope that means that his immune system is taking care of his body. I ran out of his usual Chicken and Tuna flavor this morning so I once again tried the whitefish and tuna. Guess what…he ate it. In fact he ate 2 packets. Picky kitty! Due to his energy levels, hunger level and overall attitude with purring and making biscuits, I am hopefully optimistic that his blood panel will show close to perfect. 72 hours….of nervous excitement. You can’t understand the stress involved in observation unless you lived the emotional/mental battle of 84 days injections and stressing how to get funds for this treatment and then stressing for another 84 days hoping that it worked. You watch for any sign that something is wrong and then start wondering if there is a relapse how will you pay for it a 2nd time, how much stress will it be for you poor kitty and the mental/emotional toll it would take to have to do it again. That’s where the nervousness and excitement for blood panels come into play.

03/27/2021

OB Day 28 (Mar 26): Seems itchy today so will do a bath. I was hoping for a nicer day than the cold rainy ones but we may have to see what he thinks of a hairdryer today. He had a couple sneezes this morning. He disliked the hairdryer about the same as the bath. The scabs came off his 2 spots so I put Vetericyn on them. He found his voice during bath time today too. Had to let us know exactly how horrible it was even though he got a Churu afterwards. Tomorrow it’s a B12 injection…hopefully the last injection I ever have to give him.

Guess who decided to eat the whitefish and tuna Hartz this morning???🤦‍♀️

Guess who decided to eat the whitefish and tuna Hartz this morning???🤦‍♀️

03/26/2021

OB Day 27 (Mar 25): Yesterday he was scratching his neck so I think we will try to do a bath again today and then on Monday since we see the vet Tuesday. He sneezed one time this morning. Pretty sure it was because he smelled my barn clothes, but I still jot it down just in case. He had great excitement this morning as a raccoon came up on the deck to eat the bird food. Not sure how long he watched but the spot was super warm when he finally got up. He was starving today. Ate 2 packets for breakfast, wanted another one mid-morning and another later on. Needless to say I am almost of packets again. He did not get a bath due to the cold rainy conditions. Hopefully the sun will shine tomorrow.
