Today marks the first day of National Dog Bite Prevention Week. Dogs may bite for various reasons, however, here are 4 common reasons why a dog might bite:

1️⃣ Stress, fear, or feeling threatened
2️⃣ Defending their territory, puppies, food, or a toy
3️⃣ Illness or injury can make them feel vulnerable, and they may lash out
4️⃣ Dogs might nip during play, though this can escalate to a bite

To minimize the risk of dog bites, keep in mind and practice these 4 things:

1️⃣ Socialize your dog as a puppy
2️⃣ Remove your dog from any situation where they seem anxious or agitated
3️⃣ Provide a safe space during an escalated situation
4️⃣ Avoid overly stimulating games like wrestling or tug-of-war

Any dog can bite—big or small, male or female, young or old. It’s not a dog's breed that determines whether it will bite, but rather the dog's individual history and behavior.

April is dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of heartworm disease. Heartworm disease is transmitted via mosquito bite and is diagnosed using a blood test. Heartworm can be prevented by using Heartworm prevention like Milbeguard, Simparica Trio, and the ProHeart injection. We recommend keeping your pet current on their prevention year-round, even in the colder months!

Have you ever seen a live Tapeworm? Tapeworms are transmitted through the ingestion of an intermediate host like a rodent or bird, ingestion of a flea, and less likely, ingestion of uncooked salmon or meat. The best way to prevent Tapeworms is to use a high-quality flea preventative all year round. Call the office to find out which preventative would be best for your pet!
