🩵 A New Chapter for Unleashed Pet Rescue: Preventing the Crisis Before It Starts 🩵
From Danielle Reno, Founder & President of Unleashed Pet Rescue and Adoption:
I never imagined I would write this post. For over a decade, Unleashed Pet Rescue has fought every single day to save lives, to find loving homes for the unwanted, the abandoned, and the forgotten.
Since starting Unleashed out of my garage in 2011, we have saved and adopted out over 60,000 animals. Together with you, we have changed the world for these souls, one by one.
But we are facing a truth: our shelter, as a building, cannot afford to stay open and be fully staffed any longer. Like so many shelters across the nation, we are underfunded, the animals keep coming, and the cycle never ends. Inflation, the housing crisis, and economic uncertainty have led to record-breaking owner surrenders and fewer adoptions nationwide. According to Best Friends Animal Society, in 2023 alone, nearly 378,000 dogs and cats were killed in U.S. shelters due to lack of space and resources.
It’s time for bold change.
We are selling our building, but we are not giving up on our mission. We are evolving it.
From now on, Unleashed will focus on fixing the problem before it starts. We will subsidize spays and neuters in Kansas City and pay those vet bills for families in need so they can get their pets fixed before unwanted litters ever enter a shelter. Statistics show that low-income areas have the highest numbers of unaltered pets, leading to continuous cycles of litters, shelter overcrowding, and euthanasia.
🩺 A single unspayed female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in six years. A single unspayed cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 kittens in seven years.
If we can prevent even a fraction of these births, we will prevent suffering before it begins, reduce overcrowding in shelters, and stop the crisis at its source.
This is how we make the biggest difference in the world with the resources we have.
By operating without the burden of building overhead, utilities, and maintenance costs, we can direct those funds toward mass spay and neuter efforts and direct community impact.
But right now, we still have amazing animals in our care who need loving homes. They are still here, waiting, and they still deserve a chance. We are open by appointment only to view the animals we have left in our care, ensuring they find families during this transition.
While this is a pause from the shelter operations you have known, it is the birth of a new mission focused on prevention, and it is our hope that one day, when it is financially sustainable, Unleashed will return to a physical space for animals needing homes. Until then, our commitment to the animals has not changed, only the way we will fight for them.
So we are hitting the streets, starting right where we are needed the most, KCK, with direct outreach (food, supplies, etc) to the city and surrounding metro.
To our supporters: We are not closing our mission; we are shifting it to make the largest possible impact. We are still here. We will continue to fight for the animals, but we are taking this fight upstream, where it truly begins.
Please continue to support us. This movement is the future of animal rescue. Together, we will create a world where shelters aren’t overwhelmed because there is no need for them to be.
If you’re interested in making a direct impact through our outreach team, we invite you to email us or text the shelter number with your contact information. Our experienced leadership team will provide training on our innovative and compassionate approach to supporting animals in need.
Thank you for believing in us, standing with us, and helping us save lives in the most powerful way possible.

"I just wanted to send a note of appreciation to all the volunteers who spend countless hours saving sweet animals.
One year ago today, we picked up Georgia aka "Sunkist Roll". She was malnourished had a heart murmur due to the malnutrition, had a bb shot in her tail and was a very skittish little girl.
Georgia has had her challenges with PTSD and stress induced IBS. Through training, specialized diets, lots of love and being around her "pack" at Pet Suites daily...she is thriving one year on.
She is the sweetest thing in the entire world and makes our life so much better!
Thank you for saving her and her brothers and sisters in Dallas on their "d" day. You all make the world a better place!!”

✨🩷 MEET NIPSEY 🩷✨
Nipsey is a sweet girl with the kindest heart, but she needs a little patience and understanding before she fully shines. At first, she may be shy and hesitant, taking her time to feel safe and comfortable in new surroundings. But once Nipsey knows she can trust you, she blossoms into the most loving and cuddly companion.

She adores quiet moments, gentle reassurance, and the comfort of being close to her person. With time, Nipsey will reward your patience with loyalty, affection, and a bond that’s truly unbreakable.

If you’re looking for a gentle soul who just needs someone to believe in her, Nipsey could be your perfect match. She may take a little while to open up, but the love she gives in return will be worth every moment.
She’s good with dogs, cats and kids too!
