Imagine being outside tonight.
Not for minutes.
For days.
For weeks.
For YEARS.

The wind cuts through your fur like knives.
The chain on your neck — the same chain you’ve worn every single day of your life — feels like a strip of ice pressed into your skin. Your water bowl is frozen. Your food bowl is empty. Your body shakes uncontrollably, but there is nowhere warm to crawl.

So you curl up on the frozen ground, the only “bed” you’ve ever known.
You tuck your paws beneath you because they hurt too badly to leave exposed to the cold.
You press your nose into your chest to try to hold on to the last bit of heat you have left.
Your stomach gnaws.
Your body trembles.
And you wonder, like you do every night:

“Is this the night I don’t wake up?”

You don’t bark.
No one listens.
You don’t cry.
No one comes.

You just exist… alone, forgotten, freezing, starving — waiting for mercy.

And then one day…

A car pulls up.
You lift your head, not sure if you’re dreaming.
Strangers step out — but they aren’t like the others.
They kneel. They talk softly. They bring warmth with them that you can feel.

Then comes something you’ve never experienced before:

Hope.

A doorway is opened.
Fresh food is poured into a bowl so full it shocks you.
Warm straw is laid down — not just a handful — enough that you can finally curl up and not feel the bite of the ground through your bones.
A dog house, real shelter, rises in front of you like a miracle you never knew existed.

And for the first time in your entire life…

You feel warm.
You feel fed.
You feel seen.

This is what the outreach team from Unleashed Pet Rescue and Adoption does.
Every. Single. Day.
In the worst parts of town, in the freezing cold, they are saving lives that no one else even knows exist.

💔➡️❤️‍🩹➡️💖 This is Josie Ping-Pong, a tender little soul who has survived more than we’ll ever know. She is cautious with new people, not because she’s “difficult,” but because she’s learning what kindness feels like — maybe for the first time.

In her foster home, Josie has already blossomed. She approaches for affection, enjoys gentle pets, and loves being near her trusted human. She is still working up the courage to be picked up, but her progress has been beautiful.

Josie is kennel trained, nearly housebroken, and follows the other dogs confidently in and out. She adores other animals — big dogs, small dogs, even the cat — and draws comfort from their presence. Having a dog in her forever home will help her continue to grow and feel secure.

She will bark when she’s unsure, but with calm reassurance, she warms up quickly and shows her sweet, loving spirit.

Playful surely isn't an attribute we feel we need to mention. 🥎😄🛹

But we will say that she's sweet, a tad taller than a beagle, has the cutest little pitty face and has all the puppy energy left in the world. She's good with kids, cats, dogs, everything and would love an energetic family of any age so that she can start enjoying the finer things in life like walks, dog park visits, hikes, jogs, camping and everything in between. 🤗

As we transition into our new outreach mission:
A single unspayed female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in six years. A single unspayed cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 kittens in seven years.
If we can prevent even a fraction of these births, we will prevent suffering before it begins, reduce overcrowding in shelters, and stop the crisis at its source.
This is how we make the biggest difference in the world with the resources we have. By operating without the burden of building overhead, utilities, and maintenance costs, we can direct those funds toward mass spay and neuter efforts and direct community impact.
While this is a pause from the shelter operations you have known, it is the birth of a new mission focused on prevention, and it is our hope that one day, when it is financially sustainable, Unleashed will return to a physical space for animals needing homes. Until then, our commitment to the animals has not changed, only the way we will fight for them.
So we are hitting the streets, starting right where we are needed the most, KCK, with direct outreach (food, supplies, etc) to the city and surrounding metro.
We are shifting it to make the largest possible impact. We are still here. We will continue to fight for the animals, but we are taking this fight upstream, where it truly begins.
Please continue to support us. This movement is the future of animal rescue. Together, we will create a world where shelters aren’t overwhelmed because there is no need for them to be.
