We hope everyone has a great Easter. Keep in mind chocolate in Easter baskets can be dangerous for pets, and Easter lilies are extremely toxic to cats. Even sniffing the pollen can affect kidney function. Be safe, and have a happy spring!

I know there is a lot of concern right now regarding a potentially new canine respiratory infection. This article has a nice summery of what we know, and don't know at this point. The best recommendation is to make sure your dog is appropriately vaccinated for their lifestyle. Please call if you have any concerns regarding your pets vaccine status, or if you are noticing any respiratory symptoms.

I’ve held off writing about this but since I’ve been answering many emails about it every day, here we go. The questions I keep getting (as usual) are

We have recently seen several dogs with Leptospirosis, an infectious disease that can lead to kidney and liver failure. Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease, meaning you can catch it from your sick dog. Years ago there were concerns about vaccine reactions, however now there are excellent vaccines, made with newer technology, to prevent this illness. Call us if you are unsure about your dog's vaccine status or to schedule a vaccine appointment.

Pet owners are sharing their tragic stories of loss as a warning about a surge in cases of a bacterial infection called Leptospirosis.

Rabies is fortunately very seldom seen in people in the United States. This is due to very effective treatment after exposure to rabies, and also vaccinations for pets. Pets, including indoor cats, are most likely to come in contact with sick wildlife ( eg. the bat that flies into your house). By vaccinating your pet, you not only protect them, but you protect everyone who loves them. Please make sure your pets are current on vaccinations, and if you are bitten by anything, especially a bat, it is important to seek medical attention. Treatment is much easier than it used to be. Once you develop symptoms of Rabies, treatment almost invariably is too late.

A man in northeastern Illinois died from rabies about a month after apparently being infected by a bat he found in his room, marking the first human case of the virus in the state since 1954, health officials said Tuesday.

We realize many of you are waiting a longer than average time to be seen. Unfortunately , like many clinics, we have been overwhelmed with staffing shortages and increased demand, Additionally, due to these same problems at emergency clinics and specialists, we are seeing more animals that we would have previously referred for care. Please be patient, especially with our excellent receptionists. Everyone at Mount Plaines has been putting in extra time to ensure the quality of care remains high as we work to accommodate the extra demand. We will always do everything possible to see you, although it may be a drop off appointment for emergencies or a non emergency appointments that takes a little longer to schedule. We would ask that you schedule routine care as much in advance as possible, including surgeries. We value all of you, and appreciate the opportunity to care for your pets!

Some clinics estimate they are up to 75% busier than they were before the pandemic.

We are happy to report that we are now "open" again. For those of you who haven't been in recently, you are welcome to come into the building. Updated hours are 8-6 on Monday and Thursday, 8-4 on Tuesday and Friday, 8-12 on Wednesday and 8-2 on Saturday. We look forward to seeing you!

Ticks can carry many dangerous diseases besides Lyme disease for you and your pet. While ticks are common in wooded areas, they can be right in your own back yard. Make sure to keep up with the flea and tick preventative. If you think your dog has a tick, please be sure before trying to remove it. Skin tags and ni***es (yes male dogs have them too) can look like ticks. Please call if you are uncertain or if you have any questions about preventative.

Lyme disease is transmitted through tick bites, but researchers and educators warn that it’s not the only disease carried by the parasitic arachnids.
