EHV-1 update: Yes, there is currently 1 barn in northern Illinois that is under quarantine. EHV1 can cause neurologic disease and death in horses. Unfortunately, Herpes viruses live in many asymptomatic horses and cause sporadic outbreaks. The vaccine does not appear to provide great protection against this disease but may provide immunity to some and decrease severity of signs in others. Although it is important to exercise appropriate safeguards to minimize exposure to this disease, common sense must prevail. The barn with the active cases of EHV1 is under voluntarily quarantine, and according to barn management, has not attended horseshows or had a new horse move in since September. All horse shows and hauling of horses carry risk. Under these circumstances, the increased risk of horse movement in the area is minimal.
Please contact Prairie Equine if you have questions regarding EHV1, vaccine boosters, or security guidelines for your barn at 847 949 5800.
