This is such GREAT information!

Puncture wounds in the foot qualify as medical emergencies, due to the number of vital structures just beneath the sole that can be physically damaged and/or contaminated with bacteria when they are penetrated by a sharp object.

If your horse steps on a nail or other sharp object and it remains embedded in the hoof, resist the temptation to pull the nail out and consult with your veterinarian first. Leaving the nail in place will allow the vet to take x-rays of the foot before removal, which helps to identify exactly what structures have been penetrated, and to plan the most appropriate strategy for dealing with the situation.

If your veterinarian advises, carefully remove the nail to prevent the horse from stepping on it and driving it deeper into the hoof cavity. As you remove it, be sure to mark the exact point and depth of entry with tape and/or a marker so the veterinarian can assess the extent of damage. Apply antiseptic to the wound, and wrap to prevent additional contamination while you wait for your appointment.

Penetrating hoof wounds can be extremely serious and shouldn’t be underestimated. The prognosis for successful recovery depends on quick action to identify the path of the nail, treatment of potential infection and mechanical damage to the foot, and proper aftercare. As always, consult your horse doctor for more information and advice!

As the weather is changing, let this be a great reminder that our equine partners might need a little extra attention.

"F" IS FOR FALL-CHECKLIST! 🍂🍁

As the cooler weather moves in, now is the time to crack down on housing, nutrition, and preventative health strategies suitable for the arrival of winter.

Check out this list of essential items on the horse owner's fall to-do list, but there is much more that needs to be done—like having your horse's blankets repaired and waterproofed, securing and storing hay properly, assessing your shelters for safety and soundness, etc.

Note that your equine veterinarian is one of your greatest allies this season, so be sure to consult them and discuss vaccination and deworming protocols appropriate for your horse’s situation. This is also a great opportunity to chat about recommended changes in nutrition and exercise programs as well!

When our lovely client Jan Gibson came to us wanting to make sure that her horse Boomer was ready to perform his best at the American Miniature Horse Registry National show, we had to get a little creative to come up with the right sized jump for Dr Shane Smith to watch him go over so he could see how he was moving. Leave it to the ingenuity of our incredible Jenny Espinoza and crew to come up with a solution!

Congratulations to Nathan Kent Performance Horses and his team at the High Roller Reining Classic, Las Vegas, Nevada!

It was a great run for Nathan & GunzUp In Tinseltown for owner Shelly Moore-Tyler. The pair finished Reserve in the L1 Wild Card Open, 3rd in the L3 and 4th in the L2 at the High Roller Reining Classic!!!

We'll kick off the 8th annual Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity, Derby & Horse Show at 7 a.m. Monday morning with the Open Derby Herd Work, followed by the Non Pro and the Non Pro Boxing. Please Note: Horse show draws will be posted on Saturday, Sept. 7.

Our hospital is currently seeing horses with West Nile Virus, this is a great reminder to keep your horses protected. Vaccinations early in the season are valuable.

Summer and fall are the peak time for arbovirus infection as these diseases (which include Eastern Equine Encephalitis [EEE], West Nile Virus [WNV], Western Equine Encephalitis [WEE] and Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis [VEE]) are transmitted by several different species of mosquitoes and biting insects.

With more states reporting cases of West Nile Virus (28 cases have been reported in August as of today), this is your reminder to keep your horses up to date on vaccinations with the guidance of your veterinarian to best protect your equine friends from infection.

Dr Shane Smith had a great trip to Kentucky for OEPS (opportunities in equine practice symposium) where he got to work with veterinary students from all across the country. He helped teach a lab where students learned how to use endoscopy-an important diagnostic tool that we use to help diagnose respiratory, bladder, reproductive and stomach issues.

We want to give a HUGE thank you to Performance Horse Central and their AMAZING trainers for showing these 10 veterans how to cut cattle and work flags and cows for our upcoming Way Out West Cutting Series at the Ford Idaho Center Horse Park! This is such a fun and exciting event that we have been blessed to participate in for 6 years!

Thank you to Idaho Cutting Horse Association, Barbi Magwick, and every trainer and volunteer who makes this happen for our vets! We can wait to send you pics Saturday when they get to showcase their work in front of family and friends!
