An underbite (monkey mouth, sow mouth, prognathism) is a deformity in which the lower incisors extend beyond the upper incisors. All dental misalignments eventually affect the wear pattern on other teeth, making regular dental care essential. 🦷🐴

24 year old rescued horse with a BCS of 3/9. Not eating well. You can see at red (on both sides just didn’t get in the picture) that the upper 9s are missing. The lower 9s (in blue) have a moderate step up bilaterally. Got lower 9s back into normal occlusion, would be best to see this patient every 6 months going forward. 🐴🦷

Equine dentals and exams are important for this reason here! 8 year old horse at a trainers barn. Not sure if this horse has been floated before but note the hooks at upper 6s, moderate sharp points, cheek ulcers AND a 110 that is a moderate step down. 110 is at gum line. DVM to radiograph and assess tooth health.

Check out the bot fly larva found in the ulcers of this horse. (Diagnosed by an equine veterinarian) multiple two years olds at this barn had these. Their RDVM can recommend a proper deworming protocol.
