The Marquette Police Department and the NTN would like to remind trail users that the Michigan law requires dogs need to be leashed in public areas. It doesn't matter if your pup is the most friendly and obedient dog, leashes are required by law.

Please be courteous to other users by following the law and also controlling your dog every time you encounter others. The trails are groomed for the people, not the dogs. Let's all make sure dogs can continue to have a place to recreate with their people.

Skijor setups are available at Forestville if you don't have your own but longer bungee leashes also work well when skiing, biking, or running with your dog.

Thank you for supporting trails and making sure everyone has a good trail experience.

⚠️🐶 DOGS MUST BE ON LEASH PER LAW IN MICHIGAN AND FOR THE SAFETY AND ENJOYMENT OF ALL TRAILS USERS. This includes parking lots and trailheads. 🐶⚠️

We are continuing to have a problem with loose dogs and humans not heeling their animals as they encounter others on the trail. With more and more people (and dogs) out on the trails, it's time again for a few reminders on good etiquette around "Sharing the Trails" with our furry companions.

Dogs love the trail just as much as their owners but not all trail users know how to act around our furry companions, and vice versa. Some pets get more excited than others around strangers and no matter how friendly, everyone does not love your sweet, fluffy fido. Not to mention trying to avoid a loose dog on fast downhills can result in injury to trail users and dogs. As the dog owner, setting ground rules, keeping your pets secure and managing their behavior is incredibly important to reduce uncomfortable run-ins and avoid collisions.

Plan accordingly when you're taking your favorite furry friend out on the trail.
👉On a Leash: While not all trails everywhere require dogs to be leashed, most do. State of Michigan requires by law (mcl-act-339-of-1919) that dogs be on a leash generally when not on your own property or engaged in certain activities such as hunting. Note that we are guests are the majority of the land where trails exist. By keeping your dog on a leash—and close by—you can help ensure both Fido and your fellow trail users have a safe and fun time. We do have skijor setups available to rent at Forestville.
👉Commanding behavior: Know how your pet reacts to others, and be prepared to manage their energy! The trail is a friendly, welcoming place, and a well-behaved dog fits into that equation quite nicely! Please heel your dog as you encounter other trail users. Be extra careful at trailheads and high traffic areas.
👉Open trails: Only take your dog on trails that are signed open to dogs. Check the map, look at the signs (trails are clearly marked at Forestville Trails), and ask if uncertain.
👉The scoop: It’s always important to pick up after your pet. Carry a waste disposal bag every time you hit the trail. Pitch in to keep the trail clean and safe for all.

NTN has many miles (kilometers for the skiers) of dog-friendly trails. In order to keep these trails dog friendly, we need to be considerate trail users. We are all responsible for our own and each other's experience on the trails. If you have a bad encounter, please use it as an opportunity to evaluate your behavior and/or kindly educate the other trail users involved. You may be angry, they may be angry, and stepping back will help make sure the situation does not escalate. (If necessary, call 9-1-1). A few simple actions go a long way to making sure everyone has an enjoyable time on the trails.

PLEASE LEASH and CONTROL YOUR DOGS. This is not a debate, this is a Michigan Law and necessary trail rules to keep everyone safe.
