Struggling to keep water from freezing without a heated bowl? Here are some things you can do:
✔️ Regularly refill with warm water.
✔️ Add a pinch of sugar to prevent freezing.
✔️ Place the bowl in sunlight, shielded from wind.
✔️ Use hand warmers or microwavable pads underneath.
✔️ Opt for plastic, thick-walled bowls (like Tupperware).
✔️ Choose a deep, narrow bowl; they freeze slower.
✔️ Pick a dark bowl for sun-absorption.
✔️ Sink the bowl into a styrofoam box for insulation.
🏓 Float a few ping pong balls in the water to slow freezing.
📦 Check with your doctor's office, vet, or pharmacy for smaller vaccine boxes.

Thanks for your efforts for the kitties, especially in this chilly weather! 🐾❄️

Now is the time to get shelters set up or refreshed if you have outside cats. Sometimes it just means pulling out the old straw and putting in new. DO NOT USE HAY as this retains moisture and will actually make a cat COLDER rather than insulate it. Hay will get wet and soggy from the moisture in the air. If you are making a shelter we will be posting tips on here, but one question we get asked is if a shelter needs an emergency exit, so basically two openings. We believe that the main purpose is to keep the cat warm, and that two doors will not only double the cold air, but multiple entrances into a sleeping area means multiple directions from which an attack could come, especially if the entrance is directly into the sleeping area. By choice, many cats prefer to nest or sleep inside containers or dens with only a single way in or out., because nothing can come in behind them while they're sleeping.

▪️Cats and similar sized animals generally refrain from attacking each other for the simple fact that they can get badly injured as well, and most fight-related injuries are related to mating and territory with other cats. These are dramatically reduced when the cats have been spayed/neutered.

Not the best of pics, we'll have more later, but... these are the three little black kittens, starving and sick, who were running in between yards in Browns Mills, last week.

A bath, and meds to get rid of the fleas that were crawling all over them, meds for their crusted, redddened eyes, Food, and the care of good people, have made such a major difference in their little lives.

You can save a life, too. Foster a cat or kittens. BCAA and every other rescue around is inundated with requests for help. We can only help if people offer to foster. We are an all-volunteer rescue, and many of our volunteers also foster cats and kittens, are out in the community working on TNR projects, driving cats back and forth to spay-neuter clinics and vet appointments, cleaning traps, carrier, cubbies, you name it, the volunteers are working very hard every day.

We need more people to help. Please consider fostering, and any donations of food, litter, flea and tick meds, and cleaning supplies, are always much appreciated! 💖😇💖

Very important information

The traffic this post is getting is incredible. Thank you for all your informative comments. The time to leave barn cats in the acclimation cage should be at a minimum 4 weeks, however longer is always best. It is recommended to feed wet food, something they are not uses to getting. They should associate you with food Relocation of feral cats should come as a last resort. If the cats are in danger at their outdoor home, being targeted by the town etc. It is the last resort. This is a great visual for those who work with barn cat programs. Do not skip this step. This visual will make the difference between life and.....u know
For those who take in barn cats…PLEASE, PLEASE, set up an ACCLIMATION CRATE! I have a feeling that some just get them and set them free…you can NOT do that! They will run off and sad to say…not survive (because you are basically feeding coyotes!) Relocating feral cats is the last resort after trapping and neutering. It is VERY hard on the cats.
