Happy thanksgiving 🍁🍽 I hope everyone has an amazing day tomorrow from our family to yours ! We also want to remember our fur babies. Keep in mind of the food they eat can’t not be the same we do. Caution of the things they invest is very important it can cause severe GI upset, vomiting, diarrhea and even pancreatitis. Your pets will thank you and so will the vet nurses and veterinarians🧡

HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH!!

In honor of black history month coming to an end BBSC wanted to take a moment to acknowledge amazing members of US history. Each one shown in the video above have learned and passed on skills that we now use today in veterinary medicine.

-Dr. August Nathaniel Lushington was the first African American to earn a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in the United States

-Dr. Iverson Bell taught at the Veterinary School at Tuskegee Institute.

-Dr. Frederick Douglass Patterson was the founding Dean of the Tuskegee School of Veterinary Medicine in 1944, the same year he also founded the United Negro College Fund (UNCF).

- Dr. Jane Hinton along with Alfreda Johnson Webb were the first two African-American women veterinarians in the nation.

-Dr. Lloyd B. Mobiley served in the Federal Meat Inspection Service and was an officer in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps during World War II. He was also head of the Department of Anatomy and surgery.

-Dr. Walter Bowie is a renowned researcher in comparative cardiovascular studies, he established the Cardiovascular Research Center at the Tuskegee veterinary school. He helped provide veterinary medical education to students from developing countries who returned to their native lands, where they offered veterinary medical care and established veterinary medical schools.

Better late than never.. But, As a Vet tech myself, I inspire to help all animals with the love and compassion. Everyday I wake up knowing that the difference I make today will bring an animal comfort. I am so proud of the vet techs around the world; knowing that we don’t gain much for what we do in a medical field that doesn’t appreciate what we do. We have to understand the list of things we do on a daily basis. I’m so proud to have been and continue to be a mentor to multiple vet techs. I’m especially of and for becoming the veterinary technician/assistant they are today. I’m honored to have them apart of BBSC and understanding my vision and the passion behind caring for animals. Happy abet Tech Week even though it should be all year!!!

I understand that the babies love those treats and sometimes even beg for them. When giving those treats also consider their quality of life. Some breeds are predisposed to certain conditions that can effect them in the long run. Such as German Shepherd, they commonly have hip dysplasia or arthritis and we tend to give them supplements called glucosamine to help them with joint movement. If overweight, it can increase pain to your pets hip and knees and increase the needs for surgery or pain supplements. Also another common breed that this can effect are beautiful bulldogs; we all know how much we love those big meatballs but they are known to have difficultly breathing and this can make it harder for them to move without losing their breath. We all want are babies to live happy and healthier lives just remember how much the simple things like one less treat every day can do for them.

Independence Day! Ever wonder why your dog or cat is act anxious or they’re hard to find during this time? It’s noise anxiety from the loud “pops” and “booms” from the pretty fireworks!! Advice Is to put cotton balls in the ears (remember to remove them!!), play soothing music as loud as you can, keep windows closed and cuddle with them if possible to let them know it’s ok. This may help the tiniest bit but it’s worth a try for your scared fur babies.

Being part of veterinary field we see a lot of cases that come in that are too weak to wag their tail when you talk to them. But when brought back into stable conditions I know my heart is full when I finally see a tail wag or when they give me a kiss. It is the same benefits we receive from our pets at home. Two, it’s gross to step in 🤢! Three, you can potentially track zoonotic bacteria and parasites into your home! Four, again it’s very simple to clean up after your dog! It’s FERRET DAY!!! These little cute creatures are very mischievous. The most common medical issues they develop is insulinoma. So is they start to act very lethargic or sudden change in behavior, this might mean their blood glucose is low 😱. Yes, flowers are beautiful. Beautiful in the house on the table, or on the office desk, etc. If you have a cat, that flower may be the MOST toxic to them. Lillies definitely are the main toxic flowers to cats, that includes the stem and leaves. They’re beautiful disasters for your cats. What did I do with those pills?! You may ask yourself if you have a pet that gets into things they’re not supposed to. It’s imperative to keep pills in a drawer, cabinet, bin with a lid if you have a pet. You never know one day they might find interest in that bottle that rattles or sweet smelling coated pills. These foods are the MAIN NO NO’s to give your dog. Chocolate’s (the darker the worse), Coffee beans, GRAPES, Raisins, Macadamias, Avocados, Onions, Garlic, ma*****na eatables and some other things. Some are much worse than others that can be detrimental. Please do your research prior to getting a pet and even while you have a pet. If they get into any of these listed you should contact your vet or the local emergency vet while you’re on your way to them.

It’s super cold out🥶, during these times feral/street cats tend to find warmth and coverage under vehicle🛻🚗hoods. Usually they run out as soon as they hear you coming or opening the car door... but Please try remember to knock on your hoods or make a loud noise to get them out. Stay warm, stay alert!!✌🏾🐾
