As a non-profit community vet, we are focused on helping as many people and their pets as possible with high-quality wellness and spay/neuter care. Patients for spay and neuter appointments are dropped off between 7:45am and 8:45am and picked-up between 4pm and 5pm. Wellness appointments are at the time of your choosing and last about 15 minutes. This allows us to help the highest number of pets and their people!

Making an appointment to spay or neuter your pet is the best thing you can do for their long-term health, but when is the right time? Our vets recommend that any cat or dog that may be around unfixed animals (including those that spend any time outdoors unsupervised) come for surgery as soon as possible after they reach 2 pounds in weight. All other dogs and cats benefit from surgery at 5-6 months of age or as soon as possible thereafter. Keeping up to date on vaccinations can help avoid costly treatments for preventable diseases and can even keep the other animals your pet meets safe. Unvaccinated pets are at risk from life-threatening diseases found in NYC wildlife, such as rabies and distemper.

The most important thing you can do for your pet's health is get them spayed or neutered! At Flatbush Vet we recommend that you schedule surgery when your cat or dog reaches two pounds or as soon as possible thereafter. On the big day, you'll drop off your friend with us in the morning and pick them up the very same day. Spayed and neutered animals live longer and healthier lives. Spayed female cats and dogs have a drastically reduced risk of developing mammary tumors later in life and will never develop a common and fatal uterine infection called pyometra. Neutered male dogs and cats are not susceptible to testicular cancer. Behaviors eliminated or reduced by spaying and neutering include marking, hu***ng, aggressive tendencies, yowling, door-dashing, and other destructive activities. Finally spaying and neutering your animal is the best way for you to fight the overpopulation crisis leading to overflowing shelters and animals on the street.
