Congratulations to Jasmine Johnson, student at Harcum College, and winner of the first DEI Veterinary Technology Student Scholarship! She writes, "I am honored to receive this scholarship. Education has been an invaluable tool that has opened many doors and opportunities for me. As a lifelong learner, I am committed to continuing my education beyond an associate's degree. This scholarship helps with the financial freedom I need to further my professional development in the field of veterinary medicine. I am learning the importance of advocating for myself and my patients, and I recognize the value of my unique perspective. I hope to inspire other students, especially African American students, to pursue careers in veterinary medicine and STEM fields. Our voices are essential, and we deserve to be supported and given opportunities to excel in these areas." We wish you the best, Jasmine!

Many of you are aware that several shelter and rescue organizations in the state are facing outbreaks of Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex. Therefore, the Office of the State Veterinarian has issued a 30-day Control Order to mitigate the outbreak, reduce the number of susceptible dogs in facilities, and contain the outbreak within Delaware. LIVE WEBINAR: Animal Welfare Basics for Pet Farm Animals - June 11 @ 7:30 pm
As farm animals have become more popular as pets and in small backyard homesteading operations, we find that many basic husbandry and welfare components of animal care to be lacking due to either incorrect or incomplete knowledge on the part of the owners. Therefore, the subject of pet and backyard farm animal welfare has become a popular and important topic of discussion in the veterinary community as we address these insufficiencies. This talk will introduce some of the core frameworks and standards of animal welfare science, which will serve as a foundation for a broader discussion on the welfare of pet farm animals. It will highlight the aspects of backyard farm animal welfare that are most frequently compromised and will touch on the medical and ethical discussions that can be had with clients.

Congratulations to Kaleigh Davis, the winner of 2 student scholarships - the DVMA/Merck Animal Health Student Scholarship and the new Diversity, Equality & Inclusion Scholarship for Veterinary Students!

My name is Kaleigh Davis, and I am a first year at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. I am currently interested in small animal medicine, especially emergency medicine or specializing. At UGA, I am involved in a multitude of organizations, including the veterinary fraternity Omega Tau Sigma where I am the Inter-fraternal Liaison, Secretary of the Canine Club, Vice President of the Student Chapter of the American College of Internal Medicine, and a CVM Student Ambassador. While at home in Newark, DE, I work at BluePearl Christiana in the Emergency and Specialty departments. I graduated from St. Mark’s High School and the University of Delaware. I was a Pre-Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture and Natural Resources double major at the University of Delaware. I was also involved in Sigma Alpha, a professional agricultural sorority, at the University of Delaware.

Congratulations to Lauren Kerrigan, winner of the 2023/2024 Dr. Craig A. Stonesifer Veterinary Scholarship for Academic Excellence! We are excited for your future in veterinary medicine, Lauren!

Hello DVMA community! My name is Lauren Kerrigan and I am thrilled to be a recipient of the Dr. Craig Stonesifer Scholarship. Currently, I am a rising fourth-year veterinary student at Mississippi State University. My true passion is in small animal medicine working with dogs, cats, and other furry companions, and I hope to open my own small animal practice one day. A bit of background – I grew up in Wilmington, Delaware and attended Wilmington Friends School for thirteen years. I went on to receive my bachelor's degree in Animal Science and Technology from Louisiana State University and then earned my master’s degree in Equine Reproductive Physiology and Endocrinology from the same school. My thesis focused on the effects of adrenergic and opioid drugs on the assessments of insulin sensitivity in mares. Right after graduation, I moved to South Florida and took a job as a veterinary technician in a small animal hospital, which sparked my new love of small animals. When I’m not in clinics, studying, or spending time with my dog and cat, you can find me enjoying the outdoors in the sun or getting into anything crafty. I am an avid Philadelphia sports fan and enjoy playing sports and being active myself. I’m constantly looking for ways to spend more time with family and friends despite the demands of vet school! I am truly honored to be selected for this scholarship and can’t wait to put this towards my veterinary education!

It's National Specially-Abled Pets Day! This is Daisy - she was found in a trash bag with her back broken in 6 places in December 2017, leaving her paralyzed. She belongs to DVMA's Executive Director, Christine Gacono, and can use a cart to get around (although she prefers to be carried). Do you have a specially-abled pet in your life?
