*** Sheri Ober is the winner of the giveaway***

Thank you everyone for the great reviews. Looking forward to you all visiting again.

To show appreciation to all the visitors that have enjoyed their visit to the zoo, the Newport Zoo will be giving away a free All Inclusive experience for two people ( includes sloth, fox, binturong and general admission) to those that have enjoyed the zoo and left a review. We will be going back 3 years of reviews on GOOGLE and Facebook and be choosing one randomly. Of course if you didn't enjoy it you aren't going to want to visit again so those names will be eliminated for the drawing. If you have not left a review yet you have until June 30th to do so. This drawing will be done on July 1st.

***WARNING*** We will never ask for any financial information over the internet. We will not ask you to verify with a credit card. Do not fall for these scams.

Baby red foot tortoise eating dinner at the zoo.

The red-footed tortoise (Chelonoidis carbonarius) is a species of tortoise from northern South America. These medium-sized tortoises generally average 12 inches as adults, but can reach over 16 in. They have dark-colored (nearly black), โ€œloafโ€-shaped carapaces (top shell) with a lighter patch in the middle of each scute (shell segment), and a somewhat lighter-colored plastron (underbelly). They also have dark limbs dotted with brightly-colored scales, from which they get their name, that range from pale yellow to vivid or dark red. Visible differences are noted between red-footed tortoises from varying eco-regions.

Their natural habitat ranges from savannah to forest edges around the Amazon Basin. They are omnivorous tortoises, consuming a wide assortment of plants, grasses, flowers, fruit and (notably) fungi, as well as the occasional earthworm or other invertebrate. When presented with the opportunity, many tortoises will also scavenge on carrion. They do not brumate, due to their equatorial home range, but may aestivate in the hotter, drier months.

Eggs, hatchlings, and even mature tortoises are food for many animal predators, including caimans, crocodiles and giant otters as well as birds of prey, bushdogs, jaguars, jaguarundis, margays, certain monkeys, ocelots, pumas and tayras.

The Newport Zoo will be looking for some new volunteers to help out with clean up and care of animals. Please remember you will be volunteering to care for the animals not playing with them. When the work is done you will be able to have time to play and interact with animals. You will be allowed to bring guests to visit with you when not doing our daily clean up and maintenance. If you are interested in volunteering please Private message us here or leave a message at 5419616371 with your phone number and email so our volunteer coordinator can get a hold of you.

The fennec fox (Vulpes zerda) is a small crepuscular fox native to the deserts of North Africa, ranging from Western Sahara and Mauritania to the Sinai Peninsula. Its most distinctive feature is its unusually large ears, which serve to dissipate heat and listen for underground prey. The fennec is the smallest fox species. Its coat, ears, and kidney functions have adapted to the desert environment with high temperatures and little water. It mainly eats insects, small mammals and birds. Its main predators are the Verreaux's eagle-owl, jackals and other large mammals. Fennec families dig out burrows in the sand for habitation and protection. They are not endangered at this time.

Newport zoo will never ask for any financial information for you to be enter in the contest we will post the winner on the 22nd no sooner. Beware of scammers***

This is Jerry the Linnaeus's two-toed sloth.

Linnaeus's sloth live in Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil north of the Amazon River.

They are the largest of sloth species.

Sloths are solitary, nocturnal and arboreal animal, found in rainforests. The two-toed sloth falls prey to wild cats such as the ocelot and jaguar as well as large birds of prey such as the harpy and crested eagles.

Two-toed sloths live in ever-wet tropical rainforests that are hot and humid. They tend to live in areas where there is a lot of vine growth so they can easily travel from tree to tree in the canopies of the forests. They mainly eat leaves, but there is lacking data on the extent of their diet due to their nocturnal lifestyle and camouflage.

We will be having a drawing and giving away one free sloth experience. To be included in the drawing just like and share this post about Jerry and we will draw the winner on Monday night the 22nd of April.

Sloth experience is available by appointment for $40 a person for private time interacting with Jerry, food included. Limited number a day. It is on his terms we will not force him to do anything or make him climb on you.

Call 5419616371 or Private message us here.

Happy Groundhog Day everyone

Early Spring predicted

Punxsutawney Phil didnโ€™t see his shadow in a ceremony this morning at Gobblerโ€™s K**b in Pennsylvania. Per tradition, that means heโ€™s predicting an early spring.

The annual Groundhog Day celebration in Punxsutawney, about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, originated from a German legend about a furry rodent. The gathering annually attracts thousands. He may not be the most accurate weather man at 30% accuracy in the last 10 years but he is the cutest of them.

Proud to introduce Siti the Malaysian Binturong or Bearcat. She is about 10 weeks old and is our new resident ambassador animal that will be doing experiences with the public.

The binturong, also known as the bearcat, is a viverrid native to South and Southeast Asia. It is uncommon in much of its range, and has been assessed as Vulnerable because of a declining population.

The musk glands emit an odor reminiscent of popcorn or corn chips. The binturong uses its prehensile tail to communicate. It moves about gently, clinging to a branch, often coming to a stop, and often using the tail to keep balance. It shows a pronounced comfort behaviour associated with grooming the fur, shaking and licking its hair, and scratching. Shaking is the most characteristic element of comfort behavior.

The binturong is an important agent for seed dispersal, especially for those of the strangler fig, because of its ability to scarify the seed's tough outer covering.

In captivity, the binturong's diet includes commercially prepared meat mix, bananas, apples, oranges, canned peaches and mineral supplement.

The Orang Asli (indigenous) of Malaysia has the tradition of keeping binturongs as pets. They also have an antiseptic saliva believed to help heal small wounds and used by the Orang Asli as homeopathic medicine.

Some one week old Panther chameleon babies having dinner. They will grow up to be one of the most colorful species of chameleon. Panther chameleon are found in the eastern and northern parts.

Donated to the zoo by: Curtis Atchley

On each foot, the five toes are fused into a group of two and a group of three; these specialized feet allow the panther chameleon a tight grip on narrow branches. Each toe is equipped with a sharp claw to gain traction on surfaces such as bark when climbing. On the forelimbs, there are two toes on the outer (distal) side of each foot and three on the inside (medial). On the hind legs, the arrangement is reversed.

Panther chameleons have very long tongues (sometimes longer than their own body length) which they are capable of rapidly extending out of the mouth to capture prey, which is mostly terrestrial invertebrates and very rarely, plant material. Once the tip sticks to a prey item, it is drawn quickly back into the mouth, where the panther chameleon's strong jaws crush it and it is consumed.

Here are a few of our camouflage friends at the zoo.

Vietnamese Mossy Tree frogs

They are found in northern Vietnam, southโ€“central Laos, and southern China.

The common name "mossy frog" arises from the fact that its skin is a mottled green and brown that resembles moss growing on rock, and forms an effective form of camouflage.

This species will curl into a ball when frightened, and play dead.

Its diet consists of crickets, cockroaches, and earthworms.
